People at CBS Sportsline need to be shot

Post#1 » by JordansBulls » Fri Jun 20, 2008 3:50 pm

Source: Sportsline

A new threesome -- get your mind out of the gutter -- has eclipsed Larry Bird, Kevin McHale and the late Dennis Johnson. You know which trio I'm talking about.

You laugh. You stumble all over yourself in disbelief how anyone could believe this new Boston Three Party, Celtics 2.0, could be better than Larry, Kevin and Dennis. You type furiously on the message boards "Freeman idiot this" and "Freeman sucks that" and "Freeman's a racist!" (Oh, sorry, that's the other message board). You want me to get pulled down an Einstein-Rosenberg bridge for considering such blasphemy

And did I mention speed?

Speed is the reason why if you took almost any championship team in any sport and matched it against ancient predecessors, the more modern group would usually win. Belichick's Patriots would beat Lombardi's Packers. The athleticism of the Shaquille O'Neal-Ko-Me Bryant Lakers would beat Magic's version.

When did the 80s Boston big 3 include Johnson and not Parish.

 @ that Lakers comment. Byron Scott vs old Ron Harper and Worthy vs Rick Fox in athleticism?

The NFL is an entirely different beast from the NBA. Modern NBA players do not eclipse players from the 80s in size or athleticism.

Shaq is bigger than anyone from the 80s. Prime VC was more athletic than anyone from the 80s, even if you consider MJ an 80s player

The one thing that has changed significantly since the 80's is defense. Defenses are FAR more sophisticated now than they were then.

That's more a testament to the coaching though than the players.

I wouldn't even call that homerism, Boston generally puts the 'real' big three on an untouchable pedestal. This guy's just an idiot, while it may be true in Football athleticism isn't the only thing that matters in Basketball.

Are you kidding me? Every decade players have newer techniques and better everything. Technology changed, medicine changes, new vitamins and things like that. Even the game has changed. Larry Bird would not be able to gaurd half the small fowards in the league and i can hardly see danny ainge gaurding anyone in the league as well.

Larry Bird couldn't guard that well even back then.

Bird didnt defend that well one on one. He got all those defensive awards for his uncanny team defense in which he was able to see what the other team wanted to do - and help his guys out..

Personally I think Parish and McHale would have a much easier transition today then Bird..

They may have, but that does not mean that Bird would somehow be rendered ineffective in modern basketball. He would still have his deadly shot from the perimeter, which he got off against some of the best defenders. He would still have his amazing passing ability. And finally, he would still have the same passion to win, which should not be underestimated.

To me, this is just a sign of the times. Modern players are always better than older players, and everything is an improvement from what came before it. History does not work this way, and I am sure basketball history follows similar patterns.

Or maybe the astounding answer....

The players from those ages may actually improve and thus raise their level of play due to the modern training techniques, medicine, nutrition etc etc...

Just a thought.

^ That only goes so far though. Athletics is more than just physical training. I think that would contribute more to the style of play than anything.

There are more athletes in the NBA due to those training techniques, no doubt. But, does that make them inherently better basketball players?

I hate when people make sweeping generalizations such as this. Just because modern training techniques offer players the opportunities to better themselves physically than players of the past, this does not mean that they will inevitably be more physically inclined. Each player has a work ethic and puts a given amount of time into each area. In the end, players are all individuals and not composites of the advances of our era.
