Marc Gasol To Sign 3-Year Deal With Memphis

Spanish website AS.com is reporting that Marc Gasol will sign a three-year contract with the Grizzlies.

Gasol went to high school in Memphis while his brother Pau was a member of the club.

Marc was included in the trade by the Lakers where Pau was acquired.

I thought he wanted to stay in Europe where he's MVP

You cannot generalize. Marc Gasol made huge progress last season. He should be able to contribute immediately, if he indeed decides to come over.

The Gasol deal has no present value for Memphis. I'm a Laker fan and even I think the Grizzles jumped on the gun too quickly. The Lakers did provide exactly what Memphis wanted, but with the owner being a cheapskate that deal doesn't make much basketball sense.

Of course, Chris Wallace did defend his decision by saying no other teams were willing to take on Gasol's contract without having outgoing two players that does not give cap relief and are average role players at best. As to what the other GMs were thinking of offering had they known Gasol is being dealt will remain an unsolved mystery.

Memphis wanted to cut salary, that was their ultimate goal. We sent them 10 mill in capspace and two young prospects in Crittenton and Gasol. They DID NOT want a star in return, the point was to cut salary, not replace Pau's with another multi-million dollar contract. Lakers were the only team with this ability.

The Miami Heat (just ONE example) had $12 million in expirings in Ricky Davis and Jason Williams (Kwame was only a $9 million expiring), the Heat had young prospects in Daequan Cook (better than Crittenton) and Dorell Wright (better than Gasol will ever be), and the Heat's 1st round draft picks are >>>>>> better than the Lakers. The Heat could have easily matched and BETTERED the Lakers offer, if only Chris Wallace didnt have a deal set with David Stern to make sure Gasol was only delivered to the Lakers.

I hate conspiracy theories but this one happens to be true. Wallace was told only to listen to the Lakers' offer for Gasol. The Heat could have killed the Lakers offer if given the chance. Too bad David Stern wouldnt allow it.

Also, lots of teams have expirings yes, when you add up multiple small expiring contracts together. Kwame had the largest expiring contract for a single player this past season: fact.

Also, NO TEAMS WERE WILLING TO ABSORB ALL THE SALARY WITHOUT SENDING CONTRACTS BACK. Not only did the Lakers have the largest sole expiring contract, but they were willing to to keep big contracts like Odom without demanding that Memphis take some of the hit.

Pau has been on the block for a long time now. Memphis was actively calling GM's all around the league and also receiving calls. You don't think that if Memphis could have gotten what they wanted from someone else, then they wouldn't have?

Of course AFTER the fact, other GMs come out and say, well crap, I guess I could've and should've matched that, but I'm an idiot.

He may turn up to be more useful for the Grizzlies than Darko.

I dont care if he signed the deal or not, Javaris Crittenton can turn out to be a stud at PG and they would would have gotten ripped off. The trade was so one-side.

Marc Gasol and Darko are both the same age, so this should be a nice experiment.

I realize this thread is mostly just about Marc Gasol and that's cool but people need to quit crying about the trade itself. The Suns gave up a top ten pick for cash. I mean come on. It happens. The Marlins gave up players for blue tank tops with red stripes. Stop crying.

That is actually fiction not fact Theo Ratliffs expiring was $2m more

Except Ratliff's contract was already used for the KG trade. I believe the post meant ones that were available before the deadline.
