Memphis was big winner on draft night

Post#1 » by DowJones » Fri Jun 27, 2008 3:35 pm

I really like what this team is doing, and that is odd to say after the stunt they pulled with Gasol. I simply love the trio of Conley-Mayo-Gay. Not only is that group athletic, but they all can be very good defenders. Conley was noted for his defense in high school and college, Mayo is a very good perimeter defender, and Gay has the length, height, and athletic ability to be every bit as good as Tayshaun Prince. I also really like Mayo at SG and not PG. I think he is too good of a shooter and too good of a scorer to play the point.

The Grizz need to get some post players, but they have the ability to do that over the next year. For one thing they will have TONS of cap-space as both Walker and Buckner's contracts are not promised through 2009. That means they can be a major player for someone like Carlos Boozer, Lamar Odom, Mehmet Okur, or Elton Brand. Memphis also could end up with another high draft pick as their current team will still struggle a bit next year in the brutal Western Conference. If they can get some luck and get a high pick, they could take one of the good bigs that appear to be available for next season. A few that come to mind are Blake Griffin, BJ Mullens, and Hasheen Thabeet. Memphis also has a few young big guys like Marc Gasol, Darrell Arthur, and even Darko.

For long-term success, Memphis would be much better off with a really bad 2008-2009 season in order to get a high draft pick for one of those big-time bigs that will be available. Then they can use some of their cap-space to make a run at 1 of those veteran bigs like Boozer, Brand, Okur, Odom, etc. If they can do that then I don't see any reason why this team can't compete for big things come 2009-2010.

Didn't they acquire Arthur too?

If so, good moves.

I like that scenario in that you include next years draft, as for the other end of that trade (T-wolves) i think they did well too. good post.

I don't have a problem with Love as a player. I think he can be a very solid PF. My problem is with the fit. I don't like Love next to Jefferson for defensive purposes. The NBA is all about defense. You win on the defensive ends. I don't think a Love-Jefferson frontcourt can perform well on the defensive end.

I think they will be very similar to Utah's duo of Boozer and Okur. They will be good rebounders, good offensive players, but the inside defense will really struggle.

I LOVE Mayo as a fit with Memphis. I think he fills that SG position perfectly on both the offensive and defensive ends.

They have Darrell Arthur.

Conley Jr.
Mayo
Gay
Arthur
Gasol

Thats not too shabby of a lineup. Gasol is unproven, but seems like a pretty solid player based on his stats in europe. They should be pretty good.

That quite a big 'if'. As of now Memphis has one legit player in Gay. Everybody is unproven or just not that good. A lots of ''ifs' with that team. They have nobody that can get them easy shots as they are relying on a lot young, perimeter players...none of which attack the basket like they should.

IMO the Nets are the big winner. They had themselves a plan and carried that out to perfection.

Yeah I've seen conflicting reports over who won that trade. Doesn't really matter, but imo Memphis is a much better situation for Mayo. Now he doesn't have to do it all in the backcourt because they have a steller young pg in Conley Jr. Mike will set up OJ all day ever day..but that begs the question..how does OJ's ego fell about that. This will be the best guard he's ever playd with, he's been groomed to be kobe for sometime now but when it really hits him that he won't be dominating the ball how will he handle it?

Neither are great shot blockers but the Lakers didnt have any shot blockers either and they made it to the finals. The best case scenario for the Wolves would probably be similar to some of the better European teams that have guys who can push people out of the paint. Some of those teams like Italy,Spain and Greece can beat anyone in the world on any given day. it really came down to do you want Jefferson and Mayo or Jefferson, Miller and Love. It's not like you passed on Kobe or Lebron here.

Well when Minnesota gets a guy like Kobe Bryant, i'll have more faith in Jefferson and Love getting to the finals.

I don't think Memphis had won anything . They may got themselves the best player out of the deal but i really doubt Mayo is going to be happy in Memphis .
