Hey, a local report! I think 2 months is too long, but I couldn't care less about college basketball, so maybe someone else has a better idea of how to fix it.

I actually sort of agree with Coach K. The way the current system is set up, there is very little commitment to schoolwork and direction in life. Instead, it is a free ride to attend school without having to do the work- not a great system for an organization that prides itself on "student" athletes and holds them to certain academic standards prior to their freshman year. Also, it hinders the college recruitment process because it leaves a team in a precarious situation where one scholarship could land a top player, but these teams may not have due time to lock him in.

I agree with coach k. If i were one of those players who were one and done, i wouldnt care about classes either. I would sign up for easy classes and get a two D's and then take spring off then jump to the NBA.
That isnt good for college basketball and recruiting. In the near future im sure were gona see a not so great college program all of a sudden get 3-4 mcdonald all-americans and win titles. all a college has to do is grab all the one and doners and win a title that year.

Majority of the players aren't good enough to play in the NBA straight out of high school. So we are talking about a small number of exceptional players. Exceptional i mean, players with the most hyped surrounded them. The system doesn't make sense if the player is 18 years old, an adult, should be able to play professional. Its as simple as that. You shouldn't force someone to participate in the amateur part of a sport if they choose not to do so. These NBA teams are willing to draft hyped up high school, who for most of the time are busts anyway, let them do it.

I've always thought the NBA's rule should be no college or two years of college. (Which basically means either set the rule as 18+ or 20+).

I agree with K, either abolish it all together or make it 2 years...it's detrimental to the colleges and it's hurts the kids in various ways...we covered this at nauseum in that giant age rule thread months back...

If it goes to 2 years, nearly every kid who would have been 1 and done, or who could have come right out of high school will pack their bags and head overseas.
2 years is a long time not to be making any money, and with the dollar being worth so little right now, there is a lot of money to be made in Europe.
NBA, you can't cut off your nose to spite your face, and if it moves up to two years, thats what will happen.

I absolutely loathe this system that forces kids into college b-ball before they are eligible to play in the NBA. Coach K is the least credible source, as the guy has made tens of millions of dollars off of a system that doesn't meet the basic needs of these kids and their families nor does it have their best interests at heart. For most of these guys, what they need is a decent source of income to lift their families out of poverty.
Well I know it will never happen, a much more just system is one where the NBA allowed kids out of high school to go straight into the D-League. One could argue that developing your game and riding buses in the minors will have a much better effect on these kids then sending them to college where people do everything for them, and they jet around and play almost every game on TV.

Yea Ncaa can cry all about student athlete integrity issues, but I bet they don't mind all the $$$ they rake in off the super frosh. I realize K does not represent the NCAA but he mine was well be. Those ratings look awfully nice with the Odens and Durants in the tournament. Well those same kids want a piece of that revenue was well, don't cry when they wanna leave. The problem with this situation is that you can't stop the Lebrons of the world from making their cheese. He was ready, the Odens, Roses, and Melos are ready after one year. Yea they can refine their games in college, but they can do the same same in the NBA. Biggest problem is there are always 5-10 other bozos who think they are also ready along with the 3-4 real deal holyfields.
My problem with the one year rule is that it creates an unnecessary urgency in the lower caliber guys to leave when they see their peers leaving. I mean someone like Chase Budinger shouldn't even be thinking about the NBA, but I digress..

Coach K is right; I know if I'm a top prospect, I would spend my time training, than attend meaningless classes.

exactly...honestly, i've always thought this rule is some kind of back door deal between the NCAA and the NBA....
i mean there have been some big time superstars that skipped college to go straight to the pros and these schools are mad that they couldn't even get one season with a lebron, kobe, or dwight....what does going to college for a year teach these kids anyways?
no one is being protected under this rule other than the NCAA and their broadcast partners...
