DMiles is trying out for the Celts and Suns, I thought he was done but an NBA source is saying he had an impressive workout. Take it for what it is worth.

Good for him - I hope he succeeds and makes it with one of them, or somebody...

hope he makes it back so that the blazers lose most of their future capspace.

I really doubt we will use that capspace for any significant addition in 09, so it doesn't matter much to me if Miles plays again. I think it's just a fall-back plan if someone on our roster doesn't develop as expected.

That said, I can almost guarantee that he won't play again. Dude has no passion for the game, and has never cared about winning even once in his career. If a team wants to spend a year hoping for him to show up, all the while enduring his cancerous demeanor in its locker room just to spite Portland, they can go right ahead.

Well put. Remember when he was in LAC? That team should have been so good with Magette/Odom/Miles. Instead, failed to make the play-offs, and all turned from top-NBA prospects into whiny little kids.

Why would Miles be trying out if he doesn't want to play?

Under... But I'm not sure that was the answer you were looking for.

I doubt he makes a team, and if he does, he'll be cut midseason a la Penny Hardaway on the Heat last year.

Cut right after he conveniently appears in 10 games...

Book it!

Paul Allen will be cursing his name to the tune of $27 million if he plays again.

Since Miles was adjudicated with a "career ending" injury, he's off the books for the Blazers unless he plays 10 games over the next two years.

Good job, Darius!

Thank you for thinking of us! IMO it's much more likely that our space will be used in some kind of trade (S&T) and not to sign a UFA outright. We'll still have a significant amount of space, just not max contract UFA space.

The Blazers can reapply for the same exemption even if Miles plays 10 games. He may be able to perform well in a workout, but you don't hear anything about how his knees looked the next day.

Miles's main skill is getting over on teams, seducing them with his potential

Who'll be the next sucker? Nash and Patterson were ripe, is anyone else that stupid?

Miles is the perfect example of a gifted athlete who loves the lifestyle more than the game. By the way, how's Penny Hardaway doing?

Miles does not matter a whole lot to us and here is why:

1. going into the 09 offseason, our books will look like this:

Pryz: $6.9
GO: 5.4
LMA: 5.9
Roy: 3.9
Outlaw: 4
Rudy: 1.2
Bayless: 2

now those 7 players that are guarenteed to be on the roster at the end of the season, totalling $29.3mill. They all either have team options or are under contract for the summer of 09. Now we get to the interchangeable pieces of our team:

Diogu: 3.8
Blake: 4.9
Frye: 4.3
Webster: 5
Batum: 1
Koponen: 1
09 1st : 1

Diogu, Frye and Webster were all drafted the same year and have qualifing offers, can negotiate to be extended, or can be renounced for salary purposes. Blake has a team option so getting rid of his contract is nonproblematic. While if we bring Batum and/or Kopo over, they willnot be that expensive as will the 09 1st, worse comes to worst we sell the 1st and save the extra mil.

Now we only need about $16mill as that is the max salary for a player with 4 years experience in the league. We would not want an older max player A) because he would command $20mill and B) he does not fit our timeline. So we only need about $16mill of cap space to get a max FA we would want. As you can see we are only technically on the hook for about $35mill and considering that the cap should be somewhere around $60mill we will have at most $25mill to spend, and since $16 mill is all we would want to spend, $25mill-Miles$9mill=$16mill, making him inconsequential. Sure we would have to get rid of Frye, Diogu, Webster and a few others, but for a max FA the price would be worth it.

So whether Miles is on our books or not, we will still have enough to sign a young max FA, the only thing of it is if Miles is off we can keep some of our other players such as Frye, Webster and Blake.

2. The vet minimum that Miles qualifies for is $1mill. Now if you just sign him to a 10 day contract a few things will happen, A) he will have to sit out 10 games due to his suspension and in 10 days, teams usually play about 3-5 games, so you would have to sign him for 2 10 day contracts just to get his suspension out of the way and as per the CBA, you cannot sign a player to more than 2 10 day contracts or his salary becomes permanently on your books for the year, all $1mill of it. So any GM out there will be basically throwing away $1mill of the owners $$ just to POSSIBLY screw over Portland next year. The reward to cost benefit is minimal and you will end up stuck with Miles either on your bench or on your books for an entire year, just to screw Portland. Also the NBA GM club is an elite fraternity, being only one of 30, you do not want to be known as the guy who screws over another GM like that, dupe him in a trade, that is one thing (Wallace I am looking your direction) but to do something like signing a player just to possibly screw with another teams cap space is bad practice.

3. Also even if Miles does end up playing 15 games in the next 2 seasons, the only thing we are worried about is if he plays this year. If he goes and plays in 10 games this year, his salary goes back on the cap for the upcoming summer and we lose $9mill in CS. However is he does not, we still have the capspace and we can sign whomever we want as once this upcoming season is over, he cant play 10 games from June to July 1st. What will happen is we will sign our FA if we want, then if Miles does come back the 09-10 year, true his salary will go back on our books, but we will of already signed the max FA and it will just be that much more that PA has to pay in luxury tax for a year, oh well, the guys yaght is worth more than many owners net worth so oh well.

4. Lastly this is all just a moot point as Miles was examined by an independant NBA doctor, and was found to have a career threatening injury. His quote was "This is the worst knee I have ever seen" in regards to Miles' knee. Let me state this again, this is from an INDEPENDANT NBA appointed doctor and this is the worst knee he has seen? Add on top of that Miles has skated by all of his life on talent alone and never learned how to work hard, he will make it through a few weeks of training camp and then the knee will flare up and he will be gone forever back where he came.

There really is no story here people, Miles is done and the Blazers are going to have the roster we have as of now with the chance to add another super talented piece to our team if we want to come next summer.

as to Allen and 27 million: Miles had an insured contract; the operative word being 'insured'. I'm pretty sure that insurance is paying at least 80% of the balance of his blazer contract and that won't change even if he plays for another team.

He has to play in 10 games this season for it to have any possible impact on portland's potential cap-space. And even then it's quite likely that it wouldn't have an impact. It was an independent orthopedic surgeon(s) that examined and evaluated Miles. The finding was a career-ending injury. Just because Miles signs with, and plays for another team doesn't mean that the medical diagnosis would change. There is still a procedure for Portland to have his contract removed again from their salary base. It's more then possible that Miles's decision to play and the decision of a team to allow it would be imprudent and foolish. That team would certainly have to waive the standard medical examination and give Miles an uninsured contract which would increase their liability.

Miles is off the blazer salary base because of the structural condition of the cartilege and ligaments of his knee. That condition isn't going to change for the better.

I just find it funny that anyone would consider signing a player with a knee as messed up as Darius'. On top of that he's never had a good reputation as a team player and he just failed a drug test. This guy sounds like exactly the type of player that is in high demand all over the NBA.

If someone picks him up I'll laugh, if he actually makes a comeback I'll laugh really hard.

you say this like you know him....

he started getting calls from boston and phoenix an a few other teams right after he got medical waivers.

i know him personally, and him not having passion for the game, not caring about winning, and having a cancerous demeanor isnt the case... our key players loved him and spent a lot of time off the court with him. he may have bumped heads a few times in the past, around the time he first got indured, but he had zero problems with the team since his injury, and was working hard trying to get back on the court... dont let the oregonian fool you..
