James Jones To Miami

Miami gets their shooter and potential Starting SF, making Marion a valuable trade piece to try and net a PG or C. -- And, they signed him to a very cap friendly deal, basically controlling the last 3 years of his deal, making the 2010 goal a realistic one as we stand today.

The Heat are close to signing three-point specialist James Jones to a free-agent contract, according to a report in The South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Pat Riley is prepared to give Jones a five-year deal starting at $4 million for next season. The final three years of the contract would be conditional to protect the Heat for the 2010 free-agency period.

Miami is expected to use the remainder of their salary cap exception money to sign second-round pick Mario Chalmers.

Good move for Miami. Looks like other than my Cavs every team in the East is trying to improve :(

So, what'll Riley will do with Marion? Who are the potential trade partners?

I highly doubt Jones is a starter. The guy could not play much for us due to his knee problems. A knee problem that has never been properly diagnosed for that matter.

I am happy for Jones that he gets to go home, because he seems to be a great guy, a great pro, and solid veteran leader. Portland's team and its fans will definitely miss him. The silver lining is the SF job for Portland will now be open for competition between Webster and Outlaw where they can atleast share the minutes.

Who in the blue hell wrote this?

Teams don't need to use the MLE to sign draft picks!

On a second rounder you can use parts of your MLE if you like to.

We're discussing that right now on the Miami board.

And, Riley must've seen something in him to give him the security we're giving him, where he's under our control for the next 3 years, and we retain his bird rights after he's a FA in 2010. -- Because usually 2nd rders are signed to 2 year deals, where they are a FA outright, a la Gilbert Arenas.

But, Riley's doing it different with Chalmers.....

How can the final three years be conditional?

I love this deal for Miami. Now this leaves them with a forward rotation of Marion/Jones/Powell/Wright, meaning that someone's most definitely getting moved (Wright/Marion?). I'd love to see that proposed Kings deal (Marion/Artest-Miller) go down. It would really complete that team from head to toe and return them to respectability in the Eastern Conference. Don't you Heat fans always say "In Riley We Trust"? I don't blame you. Riles is gonna pull something huge off this summer. He knows Wade's clock is ticking.

Isn't it impossible under the CBA to have three conditional years? Sounds like it's either a three-year deal with a team option, or a five year deal without the "flexibility".

When he can Ainge does this every year with all his second round picks. It gives the guy one extra year, and a noticable increase in money for the trade off of having rights to him when his contract expires.

This is beneficial if you draft second rounders like Leon Powe, Ryan Gomes.

Last year the MLE had to be used for free agency though so Big Baby got a standard second rounder deal

Didn't the Rockets used quite a larger part of their MLE to sign Scola to his Deal ?

I think you could use the full MLE on your 2nd round player if you chose to . ( makes sense for international stars to bring them over )

I see...so Riley must be thinking Zo is gonna come back for the minimum.

Hopefully he can pull a deal for a big man if he's not going to burn the extra portion of the MLE on Mario.

Good move by the Heat. He can open up space for Wade and Beasley.

We were something ridiculous like 27-13 when Jones played 20+ minutes for us last year. Also, one of microphones that telecasters put on the bench captured Roy saying, "You gotta love having a guy like him on the floor" or something to that extent. Miami got a heck of a role player. I wish he wouldn't have opted out.

Miami has offerd Chalmers a contract that goes into the MLE. Chalmers has yet to accept
