Iverson to Denver trade (revisited)
Interesting now, taking a look back a season and a half ago, and looking like Philly didnt get much for AI at the time, now look to have possibly "won" that trade. I know, you usually can't judge a trade based on what a team does with its cap space, but I think you can. Just like if Memphis ends up signing a stud, and some of the players develop they got from LA, maybe the LA/Mem trade won;'t look so bad 2 years from now..
I could be off, but Denver got AI and some scrub for Andre Miller, Joe Smith, and 2 first rounders. Joe Smith came off the books to help clear cap space, which in turn has led to them signing Elton Brand. I believe with one of the picks, they got Jason Smith, who was a solid rookie last season.
So, as it turns out, is it fair to say for AI, Philly got Elton Brand, Andre Miller and Jason Smith? And as it fair to say Philly has "won" the trade?

Re: Iverson to Denver trade
Considering both Denver and Philly are still fringe playoff teams with no real shot at a championship right now, I'd say neither of them has 'won' anything.

Your response has nothing to do with the trade. So you're saying, you can't measure a trade, based on if a team wins a ring? I am confused..
I am asking who "won" the trade, not whose team is better or has a shot at a ring..

And I said the neither team 'won' anything. Since I used your terms I thought it was obvious that I was referring to the trade as being a tie (or no decision) since neither team appears to be better than the other as a result of it.

Don't know what NBA you're watching but the Sixers look in better shape.

I had always thought the Sixers won it.
Manocad, Denver was better when the trade was made. If they're even now, it's pretty obvious who won...

Re: Iverson to Denver trade
both teams ended up doing pretty good.
Denver just achieved their best record in over 20 years in large part thanks to Iverson and Philly is right back in the East talk for the first time since A.I. had Larry Brown.
Tough to pick a "winner" tho. There's too many variables.
Denver won 50 games in the strongest Western Conference in history. That's probably equal to at least 55 wins in the East. Philly was a 40 win team that gave the Pistons a scare.
Cap wise, they've both switched sides now. Philly had the cap space the last 2 years and they got Elton. Now it'll be Denver's turn in 9 months when they shed about $25 million off their cap thanks to this trade. They'll be able to spend a lot of cash to build around Carmelo. Denver probably won't get the championship they wanted with the Iverson trade but having enormous amounts of capspace will make them love the deal next summer. It'll be interesting to see how Philly handles Andre Miller and Iguodala now that they're going to be on a tight spending limit.
Both teams are going to be playoff teams for quite a while.

I disagree, if they are able to use Kwame Brown's cap space to sign a free agent in 2009 or 2010, and/or Mark Gasol and/or Crittenton devlops, how can you say Memphis didnt make out well? They wanted to clear cap space, and did just that, now if they end up pulling a 2000 Bulls, and get spurned by top free agents then it wont look good..

Re: Iverson to Denver trade
I'd give the slight edge to Philly right now but you never know what's going to happen next year with the Nugs. If they can put it all together they could conceivably win the division and get into the second round. They only finished 4 games behind Utah this year. Philly on the other hand could struggle if Brand doesn't come back fully healthy. Also, remember that Andre Miller has always struggled to be a real point guard in the playoffs. I don't know what happens to this guy but when the postseason starts he absolutely forgets how to pass the ball. Anyhow....this is all theoretical and is exactly why they have to play the games!
When Vinny Del Negro sends in his taxes, he sends blank forms and includes only a picture of himself, crouched and ready to attack. Vinny Del Negro has not had to pay taxes ever.

1. Philly is not a fringe playoff team, they were in playoffs last season and took your Pistons to six games. Adding Brand, who will arguably be top-3 power forward in EC right of the bat makes them top-5 team on The East.
2. And even if Philly was in fact that, at the time of a trade Sixers were bottom-dwellers, not playoff bound, so if they a fringe playoff team now, they actually improved from that time and therefore they won.
So you're wrong on two accounts.

I think the trade turned out good for the Sixers, but I wouldn't say they won it.

I always thought that Philly got more out of that trade than Denver did. If you were Denver, you would trade Iverson for Miller and the cap space to sign Elton Brand in a second.
On the other hand, Memphis could have had the same cap space to sign free agents if they had dumped Mike Miller and Brian Cardinal instead of Pau Gasol, so the Memphis trade will be a disgrace even if they sign Lebron James. . . . especially if they sign Lebron James.

Re: Iverson to Denver trade
Philly won this trade in a landslide.
Not only did they make the playoffs just one year later, they also cleared up enough cap space to sign one of the top 5 PF's in the game and are now one of the best up and coming teams in the L.
Denver however is quickly falling down the rankings.

Re: Iverson to Denver trade
both teams have had OTHER major changes besides the trade that make it impossible to pin the current states of the team on that trade.
but its clear philly NEEDED the trade more than denver did, so they had a lot more to gain than denver did from A trade of AI.
the better question would be which team did the best job incorporating the player into their team. and in that case philly was much better than denver demonstrating they had a clear game plan over the long haul, whereas denver just kind of traded for AI and wished for the best. as seen in their revolving door at the point guard position and denver fan confusion as to what AI's actual role is on that team. despite playing the shooting guard position, many assumed that AI would just be a better andre miller in the pg role.dumb as that sounds. it'll be interesting to see how denver management handles the situation they got their franchise into trading for a player thats such a lightning rod for criticism when they really didnt need to...

The Sixers still could have recieved more talent back for AI. I bet the Nuggets could trade him some where right now for at least as much as they gave for him.
