IMO, the main reason is that mgmt. wants another high lottery next year to add to the exceptionally young Conley-Mayo-Gay core - and adding Smith wouldn't take the Grizz to the playoffs next year ... just the back end of the lottery.

That's because Matt Bonner is FA next season. Think of the jersey sales...

Memphis are going to be patient, no reason to make any moves this summer. That being said, I don't know if they are all that interested in spending that much money in the future either. I guess we'll see how much they care about winning in the next couple of summers.

Because Josh Smith wouldn't be interested in going there anyway?

Bingo. I have a feeling that they approached him and he turned them down.

Rudy Gay and Josh Smith are a bit redundant.

I think it goes a bit both ways - there would have been interest for sure from Memphis and Josh probably didn't want to go there, however, Memphis would have had to overpay him for sure anyway.

I think they wait til next season and in the mean time add another top 10 pick.

This is not AAU basketball...This is ridiculous. This is not NBA LIVE or a fantasy draft.

That is young and dumb team. Entertaining and a lot of sexy names, but no substance or basketball IQ.

This team wouldn't win jack crap. Go back to your fantasy keeper leagues. This is an atrocious team.

Another young new school fan who doesn't know how to assemble a team thread...

Ah, gotta love it.

Memphis is in total rebuild mode right now and they're playing it smart by not going after Josh Smith.

We have had a complete roster turnover in the past year, there are literally 3 players left on the team from this time last year.

We are gonna suck this year, for sure, as we will have no team chemistry and no veterens to speak of. 3rd year player Hakim Warrick is our longest tenured player.

Why spend the giant wad of money that it'll take in trying to land Josh Smith when we're gonna suck either with him or without him.
What if Hak decides to play defense this year or Darrell Arthur blows up? Then we're just paying a wad for redundant talent.
THe money will be there until we have a need, right now, we don't have any idea of what we already have.

And before anyone thinks I'm saying Hakim Warrick is as good as Josh Smith, I'm not, I'm just saying if he's gonna become something, this is his year to do it. He does do pretty well when he gets the minutes. I'm all for letting him prove or fail this year since where gonna suck anyway.

Honestly, I don't even expect the grizzles to be in Memphis in a couple years. That city hasn't embraced that team at all and until some new management and a goal to be relevant again, I don't expect any major free agents to sign there.

Can Smith be a legit PF in the Western Conference. This is a question they have to ask themselves. I like Smith but IMO he pretty overrated. He really a SF with a PF game. Yet he not much of a post player and has no outside shot. If he improves he could be special but I would not bet all my cap space on Josh Smith. IMO pay someone that you feel can help you become a championship team.

They're cheap. They just traded Gasol for an expiring and a couple of decent prospects.
