I know the FA class will be very strong with Lebron, Wade and Bosh etc. However, on the trade board it seems every single team is tanking for cap space in 2010. Whenever there is a proposed trade with a contract runs through 2010 some guy will jump out and say, "Hell no there is no way we take this guy since we are aiming for 2010 cap space blah blah"
I find it a little ridiculous. Most of the big name FAs are going to re-sign with their own teams anyway. Even if some of them do hit the market, how can you compete with other 30 teams that are also tanking for 2010 cap space? It's one thing to trash bad trade proposals, but to trash any trade with contract longer than two years just doesnt make much sense to me.

Yeah some teams are getting way ahead of themselves here. Unless you're in situation like NJ where you know LBJ is coming to Brooklyn getting all this cap space for 2010 might be for naught.

For many of the teams 2010 cap space will be to allow them to make trades to pick up players that are going to be given away for a 2nd rd pick from teams desperate to sign the coveted FA. I expect most teams to get worked for biiger $$$ from there original team.

The worst part of 2010 cap space is that teams will be signing role players for Max contracts in the 2nd tier feeding frenzy. By 2012 there will be several overpaid players killing caps of teams and destroying there ability to contend. I expect for every franchise player that gets Max there will be 2 Larry Hughes/Szerbiak type players making the same amount.

The thing here is aside from the franchise players there will also be allstars that teams may not be willing to extend for whatever reason. This offeseason already became somewhat of a frenzy because Corey and Brand left the Clips. Imagine what would happen in 2010. Also, there are many teams that aren't targeting 2010 because they either have too many awful contracts(Bucks, Knicks) or they already have a core that only needs the right complementary players(Spurs, Celts, Lakers, etc).

Cap space is always overrated. More time than not, teams end up spending all their money overpaying players that they soon regret having owed so much money for so long.

For some its overrated and other the opposite. NJ was not going anywhere this year, so with lebron being a FA and his friend ship with Jay-z its smart business to take a run on him. The same for NY, Miami (team up with Wade),Cavs(get Wade to team up with Bron) or Chi-town(Big Market). Teams like Sac-town or Charlotte are better off signing people now and using the 2010 frenzy to make deals that they come out on top,talent wise.Overall, if your a big market or have players you know can attract to come to your city, then yes its smart to think 2010, but if your tanking and hoping to sign big name free agents and have nobody else, your better off trying to win now.

Most will re-sign with their current teams way before their deals expire.

I know Cleveland will have tons of cap-room in 2010. After they re-sign LeBron, they stand to have about $30 million in cap-space. My guess is that we will add another player before 2010 that is in the 9-10 million range. We will use our expirings for someone like an Artest....one of those good players on another team that is bound to get traded for expirings/picks. So Cleveland has enough money to sign 1 max free agent and then another 2nd-tier player.

So hypothetically Cleveland could make a run at one of the lesser All-Stars (Joe Johnson, Dirk Nowitzki, McGrady, Boozer) to team up with LeBron and whoever else we add. Now it is way in the future but Dirk would be a good fit. If Cleveland can get a player like Artest through a trade, Cleveland could offer Dirk a max deal that a re-building Dallas team might not be willing to match...and with Cleveland in a position to win a championship, a player like Dirk who is hungry for one might jump on board.

We just had that, in 05 when Nash and Shaq changed teams.

I think this capspace is way overrated. But I kinda like it in a way, because you see a lot of low level teams doing it because they know they aren't any good. At least they are recognizing their best chance to be successful is to get lucky that summer, instead of crapping out like I feel like the Clippers did this summer.

Clippers crapped out? They added some players to try to win now and have Camby, Mobley and Thomas coming off the books in 2010. It's the best of both worlds if you ask me.
