European & NBA Clubs Co-existing...

Post#1 » by Troubadour » Thu Jul 24, 2008 9:28 pm

Here's my idea: rather than having a "world basketball association" or refuse to ever acknowledge the presence of other leagues in the world, why not try and co-exist?

Obviously, a league including the European teams would be out of the question because they have their own commissioners, employees, etc. So, I think there should be the equivalent to Champions' League in basketball.

You could take the top 16 teams in the world (8 from the NBA, 8 from various European, Asian, and South American leagues) and have play a single-elimination tournament.

I'm not too sure how the rest would be organized, but I think if the effort was made to have competitive games against the other leagues' top teams, more international fans would become interested in the NBA. Not only that, we may be surprised by the quality of play in Europe.

Thoughts?

During the Wizards' rout, a heckler yelled at new Knick Steve Francis, "Hey Stevie, Where are you going next?" Francis turned to the fan and quipped, "To the bank."

It'll take probably a couple more decades until Euro owners start investing enough money into their basketball clubs to make it worth creating a championship league that's entertaining, competitive and profitable.

But the idea of championship league is definitely intriguing and needs some looking at in upcoming years.

That's a good idea.

But I think this should be done every 4 years like the World Cup.

I don''t know about that idea, but I've always thought there should be a tournament to find the real "world champion". So it would be the NBA champs and the champs from other major bball leagues(Euroleague, NBL, etc) in a tournament. I think identical rule sets would have to be decided upon by all leagues.

They had this with the McDonald's championship awhile back, they should revive it.

Haha our Aussie boys wouldn't ever make it out of the first round. I like the concept but i don't think it would work practically. Different timing rules as well as gameplay rules.

Oh and I forgot the most important thing - probably the differential in standard would see 60pt blowouts.
