Is David Stern allowed to force a owner to sell their team? What would he have to do?

Literally, no; practically, yes.

Technically Stern works for the owners, not the other way around. I don't know why it's so hard for people to understand that. He's not a dictator.

That said, I'm sure that if certain rules are broken or that it's determined that an owner doesn't have the leagues best interest at heart he could be forced to sell the team. That would probably have to come from a vote of the other team owners.

First thing that popped to my mind when I read this thread's title was Mark Cuban. So I guess he can't force an owner to sell.

He might not get along great with Cuban, but he isn't an idiot when it comes to businiess, and he recognizes that Cuban is good for the Mavericks, and the NBA as a whole. A personal dislike would not make him force Cuban or anyone else to sell.

Stern wouldn't be able to but I believe that the owners can have a vote to try and force somebody out.
