Just think about who your female relatives who are clueless about basketball would recognize. I know for a fact that my mom and sister have no clue who Lebron or Iverson are, but they definetly would recognize Shaq and Kobe.

I dont think that he was known in Europe(especially the Warsaw Pact countries) , Asia or S. America.

Yes, Shaq is number 2.

A few months ago, I was talking idly to a work colleague who's a woman of about 50. I asked her if she knew who Kobe was (don't remember why) and it drew a blank. Then I tried LeBron. Still nothing and she was getting annoyed.

"Wow", I thought. She doesn't watch basketball, but how do you not even know LeBron, he's so over-marketed. Then, searching, I tried Shaq. Finally a light of recognition: "Yeah, he's a basketball player, right?".

Just for kicks I then asked her if she knew who Jordan was and she said, "Of course," and proceeded to look at me like I was stupid.

Whoever said Iverson, there's no way. Nobody outside of basketball would know who he is. Why would they? He gets even less mainstream pub then Kobe and LeBron and hardcore non-fans don't know who they are.

You would be surprised how recognizable Iverson is in Europe.

You're right. I am surprised. And a bit stunned at this news.

I saw a bunch of kids play soccer once. When one of them scored, he yelled out 'Shaq-attack!'. I asked if he knew Shaquille O'Neal, and he had no idea who I was talking about. I then said Shaq and he said 'That big guy?'

So know of Shaq is a wide term.

He's easy to remember, so I think that's a part of it. But yeah, Shaq has some uncanny abilities.

Give me a break, LeBron? Shaq is without a doubt the 2nd most recognizable figure in basketball. You have to at least be a semi sports fan to know who LeBron is. Shaq is a household name and everyone knows who he is. His fame extends past the reach of basketball alone (unfortunately).

Seriously, come on now...

I'd say Ronaldinho or Cristiano Ronaldo are more recognizable worldwide than Shaq...David Beckham, as well.

We're talking about basketball players, not footballers.

Anyways, I'd say Jordan is #1 by far in terms of recognition, Shaq is #2 with a big lead on Kobe at #3, with LeBron and Yao not far behind Kobe at #4 and #5.

in terms of the entire world

1. Jordan (ppl in tiny villages have heard of him) i went to Napal. I mentioned Jordan, everybody knew who he was.

2. Shaq (he's so big that everyone knows him just by his size, more so than basketball)

3. Iverson (he's gotta a tonn of fans in Europe, China, Phillipines). he's easily recognizable due to all the tattooes and cornrows.

4. Lebron (he's still young, hasn't achived much in terms of international.NBA) if he wins a few tittles he will be.
