Spain's Basketball Federation has published a good luck advert for their men's team, the world champions, in which they stand pulling at the sides of their eyes in a slit-eyed gesture.

There is no obvious intention to upset their Olympic hosts in Beijing, but the irresponsible picture is likely to cause controversy and could be interpreted so as to lead to accusations of racism.

Spanish sport has been mired in rows over racism in the last few years. In November 2004 black English footballers were subjected to relentless racial barracking from home supporters in a match in Spain. Before the World Cup there were calls for Luis Aragones, then Spain's football coach, to be sacked after he called Thierry Henry a "black ****". And last year Lewis Hamilton suffered racist abuse during testing for the Spanish grand prix near Barcelona.

Spain play their first match in the Olympic basketball competition against Greece at 7.30am BST today.

Funny thing is that they are sponsored by a chinese company. But classless anyway, seeing how this was uncalled for and how is that good luck anyway? Its like saying: Hey we are going to china! You know whats there? Eye slantered ppl, lets do the eye thing to show them our good luck charm. Its nothing racist against you or anything like that, but we hope to show our good hosts how we look at them.

Not surprising. Although to Spain fan they were just "giving a salute to their favorite X-Men Cyclops"

I can't believe you're talking about racism when they only want to say that they are going to China and conquer the chinese market by becoming FRIENDS. A fun and friendly ad destinated to the chinese community.

The Lewis Hamilton affair was a different matter and they got arrested and severely fined. Lewis's father BTW should had being fined either for making things burn between his son and Alonso's fans....in Spain.

Classless BTW is dunking over a chinese player and then make fun of them like Lebron. Or getting called traveling just once in the entire game over 4 or 5 times doing it and laugh at the refs like Kobe did...

How in anyway is the picture funny? Unless all of spain are retards I dont know how they didnt know slanted eyes arent exactly pleasing to make friends with asians....

Nope, but I've seen Bush making fun of tribal dancings as well and maybe it was not funny at all for the people of that country.

It really has a lot with english people and our relationship since they use to publish a lot of stuff like that. like when penelope Cruz did a Loreal ad and they prohibited it in england because...she wore fake eyelashes. You wouldn't understand, it been for centuries.

First of all, thanks for quoting me with respect. i apretiate it.

Advertisements are mostly fakes. The product of Loreal was ok but they said Penelope didn's had those eyeslashes. Anyway it doesn't matter is just an example of so many anti-spanish things showed in england. i remember once being there, at a pub. a note at the door said "No dogs, no spanish allowed". That's just an example of how english people hates us, just like they used to fear the spanish armada and stuff. Don't trust movies, we would have crushed england if not for the bad luck on the weather. We used to be an empire (a huge one), and we were as proud as the US people is right now. Empires fade and disappear. Enough history

Here in spain when kids want to express the idea of asian peole, make that with eyes. it doesn't mean we're being disrespectful or something. At least we don't see that way at all. We have a HUGE asian community here. and we also have our own culture. We don't expect you to fully undestand every aspect of our culture but you surely understand that we think different. Just trust me if I tell you that is a friendly-funny thing and not racist at all.
