1 Million? Seriously?

Post#1 » by Puertorique » Sat Jan 16, 2010 9:20 am

Is this what the NBA considers a nice contribution? I know players like Sam Dalmbert, Zo and Deke are donation more, but is this really the best the NBA and the NBPA can do for the people of Haiti?

Michael Jordan donated his first season Wizards contact of $1million dollars to 9/11. And this is what the entire NBA and NBPA can match?

I'm not going to lie, Im dissapointed by this. I may not be able to give $1 million bucks, but Im doing what I can to donate the most I can for the people of Haiti.

''Any time you have an opportunity to make a difference in this world and you don't, then you are wasting your time on Earth.'' - Roberto Clemente.

NBA I hope you read those lines and realize there is more that you can do. $1 million is like 10 dollars for me if even that. Come man. Peoples lives are in need here.

As for the people of Realgm if you would like to donate money cool, non parishable food and clothing great also. Please do something to help these people who really need the help.

Yeah, I mean good for the NBA they dropped 1 million bucks. That's alot of money regardless of how much you make but I think they could have done better.

I mean, the people of Portland raised over 65,000 dollars in cash at tonights game.

It's truly saddening when fans and players will end up putting up more cash than the NBA.

I have to give props to UPS also. If you want to send a care package to Haiti and it weighs less than 50 lbs UPS will ship it free. Load a box of dollar store items and they ship it free. It's not hard people.

I think Im more pissed at Stern and the NBPA then they are at Gilbert Arenas situation. Come on if the NBA cares, this is your time to shine. I expect you to step up.

I was pissed at the dress code. I still stayed a fan.

I was pissed that a 18 year old can die at war or go to prison for life, but can't play in the NBA. I kept watching.

I was pissed about Tim Donaghy. I kept watching.

If the NBA doesn't step up, I may really turn my back on this game. If they dont step up more, I would expect the NBA cares slogan to be dropped.

Really? How can people actually criticize the NBA for how much they gave. It's their money, they don't HAVE to give anything, and you're going to harp on them for only giving a millions dollars (the same amount the NFL gave)? That astounds me.

Considering the money they make it's the equivalent of handing a hobo a quarter when you've got a roll of 50s in your pocket.

1 million might not seem like much, but if you compare it to what other whole nations are giving, it isnt so bad.

What did the FIFA give the US when Katrina hit?

What the Premier League?

Retired NBA star Alonzo Mourning, NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick and the Washington Redskins are among several athletes and sports organizations contributing to the recovery effort in earthquake-ravaged Haiti.

The NFL and the players' union announced Friday that it would donate $500,000 each to the American Red Cross and Partners In Health, while the NBA and its union said it will contribute $1 million toward relief efforts.

Major League Baseball has already pledged $1 million, while the NHL donated $100,000.

Haiti native Samuel Dalembert of the Philadelphia 76ers taped a public service announcement for UNICEF encouraging fans to contribute. He also plans to address the crowd before the 76ers' home game Friday, make a $100,000 donation to UNICEF and match the donations made by fans.

"I was going to go tomorrow morning but you have to get clearance. It's not like you can go to Santo Domingo and drive," said Dalembert, who now hopes to visit Haiti next week. "If I could fly myself, I would go over there after every practice. I am just waiting."

The Comcast-Spectacor Foundation made a $10,000 donation to UNICEF, and Comcast-Spectacor -- which owns the 76ers and Philadelphia Flyers -- planned to air public service announcements.

The NFL and its network broadcast partners plan to run messages before and during this weekend's playoff games to promote donations. The announcements will drive viewers to the Red Cross Web site and feature Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma and Chargers defensive end Jacques Cesaire. Both players have Haitian parents.

Hendrick Motorsports announced it was loaning an airplane and two flight crews to Missionary Flights International, which will send support teams in and out of Port-au-Prince. The first flight was scheduled to leave Fort Pierce, Fla., on Saturday morning.

Hendrick is covering all the flight costs. At least one roundtrip flight is planned per day with no timeline for how long the plane and personnel will be on loan.

The Redskins are also flying medical supplies, personnel and clothing into Haiti with help from Diageo, one of the team's business partners.

"We're not a relief organization, but there are times when our resources allow us to step in and make a difference, if only a small one," Redskins owner Daniel Snyder said. "Getting the right people and supplies to Haiti is critically important."

On Sunday on the eve of the Australia Open, Roger Federer and other tennis stars will hold a special exhibition event to benefit the victims. Federer said the admission price would be $10 at 15,000-seat Rod Laver Arena.

World TeamTennis is donating clothing items for children through Kids in Distressed Situations, and Red Sox slugger David Ortiz said he is donating food and medical supplies. The Detroit Lions are donating $10,000 to the American Red Cross in the name of three players -- Gosder Cherilus, Cliff Avril and Louis Delmas -- who are of Haitian descent.

It's never enough tho people will always complain....
I'm so tired of the typical......

it's the notion, not the amount that should matter at least they are giving something. whether the amount is right or wrong, is not up to one of us to decide.

i thought the Chinese donation was disgusting considering how wealthy they are. That has to rank them high among the ranks of all-time cheapest bastards...

I guess it cost them too much to put on their propaganda olympics to show how great they are---and to keep their own people subjugated in what is, despite its prosperity, still essentially a totalitarian police state to give more...

If only money could solve everything. Emergency relief is extremely intricate and complex....the current efforts in Haiti aren't short of money. Coordinating everything is what is so difficult.

It's the rebuilding that needs so much money, but that is even more complex. No amount of money will ever get that part right.

One dude apparently dropped 20Gs in PDX.

But still, I think this thread and your post are both laughable

I wish people would stop doing this donation comparison after every disaster. The NBA organization isn't even where all the money's at it's up to each individual owner to decide how much they want to give. Besides right now cash isn't the problem it's just logistics. After the aid starts flowing then we'll see how much more is needed.

It's easy to criticize China but let's not forget they have some dirt-poor communities in China themselves so even though they're sitting on a bunch of cash it could definitely go a long way in their own development.
