The Pau Gasol trade revisited

Back in 2008, the entire league scolded the Grizzlies for "giving" Pau Gasol to the Lakers and "handing them" a world title. I remember a lot of media experts referring to the trade as "Pau Gasol for Kwame Brown"

Let's take an in depth look at that trade a couple of years later.

First of all, we already know the impact it's had on the Lakers. Two finals appearances and a world championship. So from LA's perspective, it's definitely a win.

But let's not disregard what this trade has done for the Grizzlies.

Original assets received from LA:
Kwame Brown (expiring)
Javaris Crittenden
Aaron McKie
Two unprotected 1st round draft picks (2008, 2010)
Draft rights to Marc Gasol

Back then it looked to be a terrible trade. But looking back, this is what the Grizzlies REALLY got.

- Marc Gasol who is blossoming into one of the best young center in the league
- Zach Randolph...because without Kwame's expiring Memphis doesn't have the cap flexibility to absorb Randolph's contract.
- Darrell Arthur (compliments of LA's 2008 1st)
- A 1st rounder in 2010

And now...another thing to add to the list...Ronnie Brewer.

Memphis used Crittenden to get back the 1st round pick that was originally traded by Memphis for Juan Carlos Navarro back in 2007. What did Memphis use to get Brewer? That pick.

I would say that Memphis getting a starting PF, starting center, two solid backups, and another 1st rounder is starting to look like a much more balanced traded in regard to what BOTH TEAMS were trying to get accomplished.

You should re-visit the Pau for Shareef Abdur Rahim trade first.

If you want more perspective on the Lakers side, Shaq trade got Lakers Odom, Caron Butler, and Grant. Caron Butler got Lakers Kwame Brown. Kwame Brown got us Gasol and a 2 trips to the Finals and one championship. Plus we still have a young team that will continue for years to come. Yeah, we good.

Especially now that they got Ronnie Brewer, Memphis definitely received one of the best long-term packages possible for dealing away an all-star.

Compared to some other recent all-star trade giveaways like Antawn Jamison, Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Jason Kidd; Memphis definitely got the best long-term results.

The real question is where are all the cry babies that complained that the trade was unfair? The Jamison trade is just as bad yet all whingers are keeping their traps shut this time around. The team with the MVP and the best record in the league got an All-star for peanuts, but since it's not the lakers people aren't throwing tantrums about how unfair it is.

hindsight is 20/20. given what they knew at the time it was a bad decision, but it worked out fine for them in the end.

Lakers got Pau in his prime, while Cavs get Jamison at the end of his on a bad contract.
