When I project, I certainly consider how I'm thinking about the brains of the guys in question, and pioneers are often guys who I expect to be top tier BBIQ guys in any context...but I think you can get into a dangerous place when you try to put the weight of the historical significance in with that.

I think this is a very interesting discussion. With regards to Russ in particular, as someone at the intersection of BBIQ and athleticism, is it unfair to project him into modern defensive schemes? Maybe it is. But I have less of an issue with guys adapting to concepts within their skillsets than developing entirely new skills (jump shots, modern handles, shotblocking, etc.). Now expanding skills from existing skillsets (i.e. going from long 2s to threes) is a lot tougher to evaluate. Wondering where you draw the line in terms of eta projections.
Now that's the difference between first and last place.
