Kareem’s 3-Point Range?

Post#1 » by Matt15 » Mon Jun 26, 2023 3:28 am

If Kareem was drafted in today league how effective of a 3-point shooter do you think he would be? Would he shoot as good as someone like Al Horford?

I think you can maybe assume guys like Hakeem , KG etc could have incorporated 3 pointers somewhat into their game due to them being able to hit long 2s

I can’t speak on Kareem though. I know he had some range on his Sky hook and he had a fadeaway but did he take a lot of “jumpers” ?

He was about a 75% free throw shooter in his 30's(just under 70% in his 20's). Might have been workable towards his prime and into the later parts of his career. Hitting a standstill open 3 pointer is just such an easy thing to develop for anyone with a halfway decent shooting stroke that it's hard to believe he wouldn't if he put the work in. I don't think it's nearly as valuable at the 5 as people believe though.

Kareem didn't have such range in real life, but he had enough touch to develop it and he was a very hard working man, so I'd expect him to do it without much problems if he decided to work on it. Whether it would be a good idea is another discussion.

If I had to take an educated guess based on FT% and the range Kareem showed when he played I'd expect him to be at a similar level 3-point shooting as guys like AD and Sabonis. Taking 1-2 shots a game and scoring a percentage in the low 30s doesn't really move the needle much but it's usually just enough to keep defenses honest and not just leave them open all the time.
