Better in 97': Barkley vs Webber

Post#1 » by durantbird » Tue Jul 11, 2023 2:25 pm

Who was better in 97' - Barkley in his first season in Houston and last All-Star, or Webber in his first All-Star, for Washington?

Barkley 23.0 PER, 58.1% TS, 4.5 OBPM, 1.2 DBPM, eFG+ 104, TS+ 108
Webber 21.8 PER, 55.4% TS, 3.1 OBPM, 2.2 DBPM, eFG+ 110, TS+ 103

About the same, though Barkley had the best high point between the two, i.e., his offense was still really effective, while his defense was quite poor. Webber wasn’t really a big plus on either side but wasn’t a negative either.

I’d have to go with Webber. They’re offensive numbers were very similar, but Barkley was starting to turn into a liability on D at this point and Webber has better on/off numbers.

I think Webber has some 2019 Siakam-esque value to him as a secondary or tertiary piece (like Siakam I think that was his best role, but unlike Siakam I think he actively sought first option status), but on most teams without a higher level lead scorer I probably prefer Barkley.

Batkley has literally admitted he was basically done by the time he went to Houston. He was out of shape and no longer an all-star.
