Shawn Marion says he was almost part of the KG/Al Jefferson trade

Post#1 » by GSWFan1994 » Sat Nov 18, 2023 2:25 pm

Just stumbled upon this interesting clip from a month ago:

On "Running Up The Score," Shawn Marion shared the story of how he was nearly traded to the Boston Celtics as part of a three-team deal that would have sent Kevin Garnett to the Phoenix Suns and picks to the Minnesota Timberwolves. He also reveals that Kobe Bryant once recruited him to join the Los Angeles Lakers.

I suppose that even without being mentioned, Al Jefferson would still have to be part of the trade due to cap reasons.

So, instead of being a 2 team trade, it would be a 3 way. Apparently Phoenix backed down because they didn't want to drastically change their playing style (according to Marion in the clip).

So, the timeline for this appears to be:

End of 2006/2007 season: Boston, Phoenix and Minnesota talk about a 3 way trade. Phoenix backs down for reasons stated above. Trade happen as a 2 way instead. Then, during the 2007/2008 decides they might risk changing their playstyle, but KG isn't on the market, so they pivot to Shaq instead.

How different the NBA landscape would be back then?

We would have a Phoenix team with Nash, Amare and KG.

The Boston Big 3 would instead be Paul Pierce, Ray Allen and Shawn Marion.

Cue another one in for the endless "what if" scenarios we might have had throughout NBA's history.

* I understand I have already posted this thread on the GB, but I'm posting here as well because I think it presents a huge "what if" scenario which I think would be a great starting point for a debate.

So first, yes I remember this. I remember being excited for the possibility, and disappointed when that's not what happened.

What would have happened?

Phoenix gets a dynasty.
Pace & Space adoption across the NBA has its big spike in the '00s instead of the '10s.

Interestingly though, I'm not sure the '23-24 NBA would be much different. Feels like we're starting to see a settling down on innovation, and I think it likely that we end up at the same new offensive-defensive equilibrium when we reach the end of this here rainbow.

Marion really struggled outside of Phoenix.

His defense against LeBron was a big part of that Dallas title, but yeah, otherwise he did. His athleticism started to fall off, they played him at the 3 which meant he wasn't able to abuse guys with quickness like he did at the 4, and he didn't have a Steve Nash getting him the ball as he wasn't a guy who could create for himself but rather a great finisher.

Marion played 5 seasons for Dallas from the ages of 31-35. Those 5 seasons he struggled his way to leading them in total rebounds, total steals, and was second in total points scored and blocked shots.

KG wanted to play with Nash but Sarver wasn’t giving him the extension Boston ended up giving him.
