Did '56 a few weeks back and decided to come back and do all of them in order, 1 a day is the goal. Included is the CORP style grade I give them (Strong MVP, Fringe MVP, All-NBA, Allstar being the grades given - Allstar only appearing in the top 5 for some 50s seasons).
1. Dolph Schayes (All-NBA) - With Mikan gone, Russell not yet here, Pettit just arrived, and Arizin working into form Schayes is actually a pretty clear pick for #1. I generally view him as the defensive anchor of those Nationals squads (though more in a 1st among equals manner). Didn't consider any other Nationals for the list though they were a solid supporting cast with good depth.
2. Neil Johnston (All-NBA) - A weird player historically, posting similar box-score stats from '53-'57 on teams ranging from absolutely terrible to clear best in the league. I'm of the belief that those early casts were atrocious (I'm looking at you late career Fulks). Arizin was back for this go around, but not quite up to speed and the depth was lacking too so still not a particularly good cast. Missed the playoffs, but I don't see this Johnston differently from the version that won a title as the 1B the very next season.
3. Bob Cousy (All-NBA) - Headlined the strong offense/weak defense Celtics prior to Russell. With Macauley falling back from earlier seasons Cousy was the clear driver of this particular squad. Had a tough playoff outing vs the Nationals, but I don't think enough to drop him.
4. Bob Pettit (All-NBA) - Not quite what he'd become, but Pettit came in very good. Still the worst team in the league, but that'll happen when Bob Harrison is the #2 minutes guy.
5. Larry Foust (Allstar) - A guy I have a fair amount lower than the consensus was here in this thread. I do view him as the top Piston over Phillip/Yardley/Hutchins, but that is a strong cast (contending with the Knicks for best supporting cast in the league). A clear 4th on the squad in playoff minutes, dropping to 5th in the Finals. I think as the C he got a bit of an undeserved boost as the hypothetical defensive anchor of the Pistons, where Hutchins may have deserved more love there. No other real contenders for this spot, so I'll give it to the top Piston. He wasn't a bad defender either and was certainly a high value scorer.
Edit:
Could be swayed on moving Pettit up or down a spot, but others are pretty set.
Other guys I gave somewhat serious consideration: the Pistons cast, the Knicks cast (deciding on Gallatin as the top candidate), Arizin, Mikkelsen, and Sharman. Didn't give the Royals any real love, thought Davies was still their best RS player, but pretty much done by playoff time.
I bought a boat.
