BPM Question: Jokic vs Murray for Timberwolves game

Post#1 » by DatAsh » Thu Feb 1, 2024 5:34 am

Last night I finally watched my recording of the Nuggets/Timberwolves game where Jokic went 26/14/10 with 106% TS(I'm so far behind due to helping my dad rehab from surgery). I was curious what all the advanced stats would be for this game, and one thing that surprised me is that Jamal Murray actually had a higher BPM than Jokic in this game. Both were insane and beyond sustainable, but Jokic is at 22.7 and Murray is 23.6.

Murray had an insane game as well. Comparing the two in full.

Jokic:
26pts, 14rb, 10ast, 2blk, 3tov, 21.7% USG, 106% TS

Murray:
23pts, 3rb, 9ast, 2stl, 1tov, 22.2% USG, 92% TS

Looking at those stat lines, my intuition would be that the first one(Jokic) would be favored by most advanced metrics, so it surprised me that BPM rates the latter higher.

The things I see that favor Murray's stats are the 2 less turnovers, and 2 steals are almost certainly more valuable than 2 blocks(by how much, I don't know), but is that enough to outweigh 3pts, 11rb, 1ast, and 14% better shooting efficiency? The USG rate is close, and I'm honestly not sure if higher or lower is better here, though my intuition is that equal stats on a lower USG is better.

What do you think? Is BPM correct here in rating Murray's stat line higher than Jokic's?

*Edit: I missed the fact that Jokic had 1 foul to Murray's 0, so I'm sure that affects it, but even with that I'd rate the Jokic stat line higher based of intuition.
