I'm pretty low on 'melo compared to the mainstream, but I don't understand this thread. They're different kinds of player. It's almost like comparing Carmelo to Derek Fisher.

Yes, Schrempf was a 2-time 6MOY who was also quite a capable starter, featured prominently in Seattle's run in the 90s and was just... really, really good.

Fisher was an occasionally decent defender who could spot up from 3 and handle the ball over the timeline. He was a solid roleplayer, but nothing like Schrempf, for sure.

Melo is clearly better in a vacuum.

However, who would I want on my team if I was building a contender?

I rather have Detlef as a 2nd or 3rd option.

Melo as a 1st option is a recipe for disaster and he is too much of a ball hog to be a good 2nd or 3rd option.

Melo produced clearly more points per game in a vacuum. Dunno about "clearly better," as that gets into quality in role and all that.

Kind of depends on which version, though. Otherwise, that statement is hyperbole. He worked out reasonably well for the Knicks in that role.
