Curry/Thompson vs. Price/Miller vs. Nash/Allen

Post#1 » by Ol Roy » Sat Jun 1, 2024 1:35 am

The Warriors were fortunate to obtain Steph Curry (2010) and Klay Thompson (2012) and have their careers overlap.

Historically, I can think of two other pairings in the Splash Brothers mold that could have hypothetically occurred.

The first is Mark Price (1987) and Reggie Miller (1988), and the second is Steve Nash (1997) and Ray Allen (1997).

While it's easier to have confidence in what we've already seen, how well do you think the other pairings would have compared to the Splash Brothers, both in their own eras and during the 2010s?

Thompson complements Curry defensively in a way that you don't see in the other two pairings, and Curry is the best offensive player of the group.

Price/Miller would be extremely vulnerable defensively, and Nash/Allen would only be marginally better.

I think that's fairly open and shut TBH.

Between the other two I think Nash/Allen is comfortably the better pairing, as I've got Reggie and Ray on the same tier and Nash as a better version of Price.

Interesting feedback. I agree that Thompson is the best defender in the group. I had a different impression regarding your second point; I've always heard of Price described as a pesky defender (not so much for Nash) and Miller has a length advantage over Allen.

In terms of replicating the Curry/Thompson dynamic... with Price being an elite ballhandler who was also excellent off ball, and Miller being a primary off-ball mover, I can see an instant mesh. I think Nash and Allen are a little bit different from the other pairs in that the SG (Allen) could also handle the ball, while the PG (Nash) didn't do a ton of off-ball movement (unless I'm mistaken). But they probably have the higher talent ceiling-maybe higher than Curry/Thompson-given Klay's lack of ball handling?

I'll go ahead and say that both of the hypothetical duos are closer to Steph/Klay if we aren't adding Draymond to the mix. I might actually bet on Nash&Ray having the best title window without Draymond being involved. That's just so much versatility and way more than any 00's defense would have been ready for. More so if you add decent pieces around them. Price/Miller should also do well without a doubt but with Price you only get about 4 healthy seasons so that's a big detriment.
