Who you got, Anthony Edwards or Paolo Banchero?

Both no.1 picks

One is a better game manager and has a higher iq, the other is a better shot maker and scorer. Both young stars of defensive minded teams.

Which young star are you taking right now?

This trade wasn't some conspiracy - it was just a GM wanting AD bad enough where in most people's eyes he overpaid by a long shot to get him.

Right now, I would take Edwards.

For one, I think Edwards is a better defensive player.

He can truly be the best on-ball defender in the NBA at times, and I would rate him as a really strong positive on that end. There were times in the playoffs, when I think you could argue he had more defensive impact than the typical all-nba guard, because of how disruptive he was to ball-handlers trying to get their teams into offensive sets.

Booker's basic box numbers were quite good against the Wolves, but through the series, he did not look super comfortable.

Against the Nuggets, while Murray was banged up, I still do think Edwards did a pretty exceptional job. He was so quick to get around screens, that Murray didn't get to pull-up from 3 like he's been known to do, because Edwards would just teleport to the spot that Murray would likely have shot from.

I believe Murray had a -10rTS% the first 6 games of the series, and by series end it was around -8. The list of guys to have an offensive load of 40 with a rTS% that poor in the modern era is sparse, and while Murray's injury played a big part in this, I guess I don't know how a healthy Murray would have done against the physical freak that is Edwards that is locked in like this.

I haven't seen Banchero achieve anything in the RS or PS, as impressive from what I have seen from Edwards. Banchero is not bad, but he does not have particularly earth-shattering moments that Edwards has, and I don't think Banchero is especially attentive to cutter drivers more so than Edwards at this time.

On offense, Paolo and Edwards both have some of the same issues where they settle for tough pull-ups (and many of them being 2s), to the point that their percentages suggest it is an albatross that they take so many.

Both can get to the rim, and draw fouls, though I think I do prefer Edwards here. His athleticism is more special, and his 3pt shooting is in a different tier at this point, which makes defenders have to play that much closer to him, allowing for blow by's.

Paolo showed flashes against a tough Cleveland defense, but Edwards has the larger sample size in the playoffs, and I think you could argue every series by Edwards except the most recent one against the Mavs is superior to what Paolo did.

In the end, Paolo against the Cavs was at 27 pts per 75 on rTS% of -1.6%. He didn't quite pick the defense apart because while having better passing intuition than Edwards, he isn't the ball-handler that Edwards is, and doesn't force the same rotations from the defense. Paolo isn't going operate all over the court with his handle, and force defenders to reposition in quite the same way. Banchero ended with a -0.2 PlayVal.

Therefore, I would say Edwards is ahead right now offensively and as a playmaker.

We've gone from Ant getting MJ and Shai comparisons and being considered top 10 at age 22 to Paolo comparisons now? I mean I'm still not quite as high on Ant as many are but he was 7th in mvp voting already and 2nd team all nba. Paolo otoh I'm not sure will ever be top 20. Maybe he is in a few years but still sort of a gulf between these two in terms of projecting them currently imo.
