Build a Celtics like team from 90s-10s

Post#1 » by Dr Positivity » Thu Jun 20, 2024 3:44 am

Best player like Tatum is just short of being called MVP caliber (don't pick players like Wade/Kawhi that we know were), #2 scoring option that's good enough to win Conference/Finals MVP perennial all-star but not really a franchise player, but 3rd-6th is stacked with lower level all-star level or strong starter players, and maybe if you want make one of them older version.

eg.

PG: Terry Porter (Holiday)
SG: Mitch Richmond (Brown)
SF: Detlef Schrempf (Porzingis)
PF: Anthony Mason (White)
C: Patrick Ewing (Tatum)

6th: Late 90s Joe Dumars (Horford)
Liberate The Zoomers

PG: Jason Kidd (Tatum)
SG: John Starks (White)
SF: Glen Rice (Brown)
PF: Tom Gugliota (Porzingis)
C: Rasheed Wallace (Holiday)

6th: 2002 John Stockton (Horford)

Very tempted to just list the 2014 Spurs or one of the championship Pistons teams here.

Anyway, circa 2009/10:

PG — Andre Miller (Jrue)
SG — Brandon Roy (Tatum)
SF — Andre Iguodala (Brown)
PF — Rashard Lewis (White)
C — Andrew Bogut (Porzingis)
6 — Marcus Camby (Horford)

PG: John Stockton (Brown)
SG: Eddie Jones (Porzingis)
SF: Scottie Pippen (Tatum)
PF: Larry Nance (White)
C: Dikembe Mutombo (Holiday)

6th: Early/mid 90s Horace Grant (Horford)

PG: Terry Porter (Jrue)
SG: Joe Dumars (White)
SF: Vince Carter (Brown)
PF: Tracy McGrady (Tatum)
C: Rasheed Wallace (Zinger)

6th man: Arvydas Sabonis (Horford)

Not perfect comps, but I think they are close enough. 2 ball handlers, 1 athletic wing scorer, 1 versatile swing scorer, 2 stretch bigs, just like the 2024 Celtics. Everybody playing D and shooting the 3.

1. For the sake of simplicity I’m going to try to do similar positional groupings as well…

2. As an additional challenge I’m going to use players you did not (damn you for that Terry Porter/Jrue Holiday comp pick that one is perfect :D )

PG: Jrue Holiday —> Mookie Blaylock 94’—98’
SG: Derrick White —> Nate McMillan 93’—96’
SF: Jaylen Brown —> Shawn Marion 03’—06’
PF: Jayson Tatum —> Scottie Pippen 94’—97’
C: Kristaps Porzingis —> Clifford Robinson 99—02’

6th: Al Horford —> Rasheed Wallace 07’—10’ past his prime like Al but still quite good

Using mostly the late 2000s:

PG: '10 Kidd (Jrue)
SG: '05 Manu (Brown)
SF: '06 Pierce (Tatum)
PF: '08 Odom (White)
C: '18 Capela (Porzingis)

6th Man: '11 Marion (Horford)

The dicey one here is Kidd, since his historical profile is WELL above Jrue's, but I think using old man Kidd is fair here, as a player at that age he is in line with where Jrue is today imo.

I think flaco is the closest. Guards who shoot 3's and aren't ball dominant, do it all small forwards with good size, big men who can play 5 out. I'd keep the same guys but have Sabonis for Porzingis and Rasheed for Horford because of the injury issues but that's a pretty good comp.

I didn't think we were making teams based on style, rather focusing on different players of similar tier.

Probably true but there are so many to choose from, why not go for the style points.

Tried to keep it comparable in role but adjusted slightly for era, particularly since shooting bigs were much rarer.

PG: Joe Dumars (Early 90s Detroit, Jrue) - others mentioned Dumars but I did make this topic: viewtopic.php?t=2321821
SG: Jeff Hornacek (Mid-late 90s Utah, White) - swapping offense for defense a bit here but still a solid two-way combo guard
SF: Michael Finley (2000-ish Dallas, JB)
PF: Grant Hill (Late 90s Detroit, JT) - this is the "just short of MVP caliber" guy
C: Rik Smits (1997-98 Indiana, Porzingis)
Backup big: Robert Parish (1993-94 final Celtics stretch, Horford) - nice coincidence being both a Celtic and older age

Not going to follow super strict because this is for fun and I don't want to think too hard

When I think of the Celtics one of their main strengths is that their 6 guys are all threats on both ends of the floor, can play multiple positions, and each of them is able to initiate an offense. If some players are too good then just adjust to a later career form I guess.

PG - Lance Stephenson
SG - Klay Thompson
SF - Tracy McGrady
PF - Rashard Lewis
C - Rasheed Wallace
6th - Draymond Green

I like a little bit of chaos hence the personalities but I think their playing styles generally mesh.
