Outside shooting was the only thing Kobe did better than Jordan.

Kobe’s outside shooting was overrated. He has the most 50+ point games in history while shooting less than 50% FG. He’s the only player in history to win FMVP without shooting above 50% FG in any game in the series and he did in TWICE Even his finale game against Utah when he scored 60. Dude went 22-50 overall and 6-21 from the arc Dude was an unconscious gunner and an overrated shooter. All of the raw shooting statistics favor Jordan and all of the advanced metrics favor Jordan as well but people are still quick to claim that Kobe was a better shooter based on the evidence of nothing.

Generally I agree its just that there were games where Kobe really got in a groove and would shoot like 8-12 from 3 pt range while hitting a bunch of midrange shots and go for 55+ but those games almost always happened in the rs against poor defenses. Its more likely to happen though when a guy is averaging 22+ fgapg which Kobe did 5 times. He could take 30 shots even when he was having an off night so when he was feeling it he'd usually shoot 35+ times which translates to a lot of high scoring games. Even in that 35ppg season though there were 24 games where he shot under 40% from the field. Now compare that to MJ's 35ppg season in 1988 and he only had 4 such games and 2 more where he shot exactly .400. That's a big difference in consistency.

Kobe’s 3-pt% and FT% are fractionally better than Jordan to the point where his advantage is basically negligible. Is there anything he was obviously better at than Jordan?

Jordan’s 3 point shooting is inflated by the disproportionate amount of 3s he took with the short 3 point line in 95 96 97. He’s a sub 30% three point shooter with the real line. His pre 96 stats are also inflated in a straight comparison because of the difference in league pace and defense.

I think it's better to look at the seasons in which Jordan shot at a meaningful volume. Even if you take out the shortened-line years, '90 (38%) and '93 (35%) are probably a better indicator of Jordan's ability from range.

If put in Kobe's era with Kobe's volume, I see Jordan being a consistently above average three-point shooter.

It's worth noting that any season where he shot a truly awful percentage came in seasons where he barely took any.

Exactly. They want to hold it against Jordan for shooting a higher % the two seasons he played with the shorter line but not hold it against the rest of the league and then they want to hold it against him when his % was skewed negative his first four seasons when the only 3’s he took were half court heaves at the buzzer. Can’t have it both ways but they damn sure try
