Going back to 2000 how many championship teams would you have as clear favorites over the 24’ Celtics?

People do do this stuff every year and it’s usually not justified, since obviously almost definitionally a title team in any given year is probably not too far away from a median title team. But the 2024 Celtics were a 10.7 SRS team that had no problem in the playoffs at all (albeit with a pretty easy road overall). There’s good reason to think they aren’t anywhere near a median title team.

They didn’t face a real team and literally everyone kept thinking they were gonna lose to the wolves or nuggets because they seemed fake as hell only to somehow play 3 teams that wouldn’t make the playoffs in the west (given injuries) and then the mavs lol

If they win next year, sure they can get hyped up, but no one should seriously think they’re like a top 5 team ever or something because of their regular season SRS and because they played like 1 decent team in the playoffs lol

Okay, so first of all saying “literally everyone” kept thinking that is wrong. I for one was saying over and over again on these forums that the Celtics would and should be substantial favorites against any team.

Secondly, I’m not sure why it matters that much that their road to the Finals wasn’t difficult. They were a 10.7 SRS team! They could’ve played you and me in the playoffs and we’d still be able to have high confidence that they were substantially better than the median title team! Which is not even mentioning the fact that the Mavs had been a 9 SRS team since the trades, so probably aren’t an opponent we should downplay anyways.

SRS is literally just margin of victory + strength of schedule lmao, I’m not gonna respond to the “mavs are a 9 SRS team post trades” lol

I feel like pretty much all the recent champs since 2017 could at least push them.
