I tend to use the NBA 1 to 5 as primarily defensive ratings, do you guard the smallest (1) or biggest (5) opponent. The traditional PG definition screwed this up in an attempt to fit in players like Oscar, West, Magic, etc. who were both the primary ballhandler and who guarded 2-3 rather than 1 generally.

Then it gets trickier because being the guy who brings the ball up the court is not the same as being the primary playmaker (think mo williams with lebron)

Guys like kobe, lebron, jokic, curry, paul are all their teams primary -decision makers- on or off ball but they are so different that calling them all point guards wouldnt say much.

I think size/defense based positions (bigs, wings, guards) with offensive role designations is as good as it gets (3 and D wing, rim runner big, point forward, etc)
