Joe Dumars vs Klay Thompson

Post#1 » by durantbird » Tue Apr 15, 2025 6:16 am

Having Joe Dumars in the news again as a potential GM hire for the Pelicans made me think of this question.

Some similarities here. Second best guard in a dynasty, great defender, though Dumars defensively and has more playmaking, while Thompson his more focus on shooting.

Who do you think is the better player in their prime?

Klay definitely peaked higher, but Dumars maintained a high level for longer. Like in 2015, Klay might have been a top 10 player in the league, but by 2017 he was already pretty mediocre. 3 year prime is Klay all day, 7 year prime is probably Dumars.

I don't think Klay was ever close to top 10 player.

As a #1 I'd go with Joe but if you can have the luxury of letting Klay mainly be an off ball #2 then I think he becomes more impactful. Peak is kind of subjective to what you value.

And today Dumars wouldn't be close to a top 10 player either.

So what's your point exactly?

Oh god I would never compare Dumars to a 3 point chucker. Dumars could do it all offensively.. Klay was pretty one dimensional who fell into a perfect system for his game
