Which 5 guys would you choose to form an all-time NBA defensive team? Here's mine...
PG: Dennis Johnson
SG: Sidney Moncrief
SF: Kawhi Leonard
PF: Bill Russell
C: Hakeem Olajuwon

PG - Jrue Holiday
SG - Tony Allen
SF - Scottie Pippen
PF - Tim Duncan
Cc - Bill Russell

Jrue had his best defensive seasons at SG, but still decided to stick him at PG here. Do think Allen was good enough to overcome the minutes gap to other contenders. Prime, not career value, though the list would certainly share a few names.

Apart from Russell whose era-relative impact was just so darn great, I think every other member of this team would be a defensive role player. Two-way stars just put in too much energy on offense to match guys who have the luxury to simply focus on D.

Here is my team on a whim:

PG: Mookie Blaylock (Why not? Impact stats love him and he flies under the radar.)
SG: Tony Allen
SF: Kawhi Leonard (young version)
PF: Bobby Jones
C: Bill Russell

Not by those of us that watched him play.

It's a great selection. Blaylock is wholly deserving. All-defensive team 6 straight seasons (1993-94 to 1998-99). Only 1 of 4 players with 5+ seasons of 200+ steals (the others being Jordan, Stockton, and Alvin Robertson). Great man/shot defender.

Kidd
Pippen
Kawhi
Duncan
Russell

Kidd is really the only question mark for me, but Pippen can take the quickest PG's and Kidd' basketball brain is just something I want.

Gary Payton
Sidney Moncrief
Scottie Pippen
Dennis Rodman
Hakeem Olajuwon

I was torn between KG vs Rodman, but went with Rodman

While Pippen can certainly play the 2 defensively, he got publicly upset at being asked to play the 2 when Jordan retired (though that may have just been more fallout from the Toni Kukoc contract). I'd probably have Kidd and Frazier as my defensive guards; Kidd for his full court play and defensive rebounding, Clyde for point of attack disruption.
