Great Defensive Backcourts

Post#1 » by kcktiny » Sat Aug 23, 2025 1:11 am

A 1973-74 playoff game (1st qtr+) - the Chicago Bulls against the Detroit Pistons, pretty clean video.

The Bulls had a great defensive backcourt of PG Norm Van Lier and SG Jerry Sloan, both named to the all-defensive 1st team that season:

Any ideas on other comparable defensive backcourts?

Great shout. Van Lier / Sloan is a top tier back court.

I’ll throw out McMillan and Payton.

Jrue Holiday / Derrick White
Sidney Moncrief / Quinn Buckner
Dennis Johnson / Gus Williams (?) - I'm not sure here. Haven't really seen footage on Gus' defense.

I think whatever backcourt combination you want to choose for last years Thunder is a pretty good choice here: Caruso / Shai / J-Dub / Wallace

The Oklahoma city thunder from Last season would be in the conversation
they have Elite personnel on the backcourt defensively and with their depth there were many combinations which could be choose from. Example like Caruso/ J'dub - Caruso/ SGA - Caruso/Cason

I don't know about great. Not sure how many great defensive backcourts there are. But since nobody's posting, I'll throw some pairs out there:

Kidd/Kittles
Brandon/Phils
Hardaway/Anderson
Harper/Jordan
Hunter/Dumars
Blaylock/Augmon

Although he didn't play there most of the time, Havlicek combined with KC Jones and with Don Chaney at times.

Decided to look at ABA guys just for kicks, though the guards, strangely enough, were the weakest part of that league. Brian Taylor and Mike Gale played together in NY though Super John WIlliamson won the starting job over Gale by halfway through the season.
