Having watched a few games from this series a while back, I definitely came away with the impression that Bird was the best player on the court. So your breakdown of what happened seems accurate to me. In terms of Bird's defense, I think his positioning was amazing. As you said, he lacked in verticality which is a valid concern but his very presence often deterred drives, drew charges, led to confusion/turnovers... And he's one of those guys who would usually be in the right place at the right time.
I also await your Hakeem plus minus data.
From the very limited samples I've seen (pretty much just Finals games), Hakeem's plus minus doesn't look too inspiring but that's just a very small sample. Also if there are any games you can't get a hold of, let me know and I may be able to help.
