In a draft: Horford vs Billups

Post#1 » by durantbird » Wed Nov 5, 2025 9:51 am

If you could draft them at the very start of their careers for a rebuilding team with no true cornerstone, who would you take - Chauncey Billups or Al Horford?

Billups had the higher peak with Finals MVP and elite leadership but took years to develop. Horford a unique, versatile big who was ready to contribute and plug into any system from day one, with longevity and consistent team impact. Who gives more total career value?

Taking a gamble with Billups.

Billups had to knock around for a few years and switch teams several times before finding his niche.

The team that drafted him never really got dividends from that (though to be fair they traded him during his rookie year).

If we're factoring that in I think you have to go Horford.

Tough question.

I would say that Billuos had the greater NBA career with better prime and higher peak, and while he bounced around a while before finding his niche, I think that could have been sped up with smarter franchises. So I think I’d generally say Billups.

But Horford was the player better able to fit on more teams in more roles and I think he was considerably more positive as a culture builder, so there are certainly teams where Horford would be the guy to draft.

We're talking about a man who was Giannis' daddy vs someone who was carried by Ben Wallace.

I'll take Giannis' daddy over Chauncey Billups. The proof Horford owns Giannis? Here are his stats/75 with opp adj rTS in playoffs vs Giannis

2018 Bucks vs Celtics Horford: 19.8/9.5/3.6 on +10.1 opp adj rTS
2018 RS Horford: 15.2/8.7/5.6 on +1.9 rTS
2019 Bucks vs Celtics Horford: 16/7.9/4.4 on +7.2 opp adj rTS
2019 RS Horford: 17/8.4/5.2 on +4.5 opp adj rTS
2022 Bucks vs Celtics Horford: 12.2/9.8/3.9 on +4.7 opp adj rTS
2022 RS Horford: 13/9.8/4.3 on +0.4 opp adj rTS

I'll take a guy who can handle a top 75 player over a role player.
