1. Moncrief
2. Michael Cooper
3. Jordan
4. Kobe
5. Dumars (size matters or he'd be number 3 ahead of Jordan)

Dennis Johnson would be next on my list, great defender mainly at SG.
Jerry West could be in there, I only saw him at the end of his career.
Alvin Robertson gambled too much for my taste though he did it well.
Jerry Sloan was like Ron Artest, great against the big, physical guys, but not as quick as some. Havlicek and Bowen were SFs mainly.

Best list I've seen...and lmao at people saying Kobe definitely isn't on here. Shows how much people let their hate blind them.

No idea why you have Scott there, but leave off Cooper who was a lot better defensively and played on the same team at the same time. Coop was a DPOY candidate year in and year out. Scott wasn't, and while solid defensively has nothing to do on a top 5 list like this.

You make a good point and honestly i did not know Coop played 2 guard (didnt see much of the old Showtime era) so yes i am aware of his Defensive prowess and i Put him in there ... And honestly i changed the list around because i really didnt see the defensive part (very dumb of me to be unaware like that)

Dumars, Alvin Robertson, and MJ are all easily in the top 5, the other 2 spots are up for grabs

How is Jerry Sloan not top 5 on everybodies list. He was a defensive freak, and for anyone who says he didn't guard the smaller quick guards of the generation, ask Walt Frazier.

Bowen more of a sf no?

In no particular order; Jordan, Dumars, Moncrief & Cooper. I could pick a 5th, but I'd just be pulling a name out of a hat. You could maybe say Kobe if you wanted to.

I left off guys like West, Hondo, Sloan etc not because they may not have been deserving, but because I simply haven't seen enough of them to be able to have an informed opinion. I could sit here and pretend like I know what the hell I'm talking about...but it'd be a lie lol

It's hard to say with older players, because positions weren't as clearly defined. It puzzles me that Jerry West seems to be considered a SG when talking about best overall SGs, but seems to be thought of as more of a PG here. And what about Frazier?" Clyde would be 6'5"+ in modern measurement; he considered himself a "guard"--neither 1 nor 2.

I think Moncrief, Jordan, West, and Cooper are the no-brainers. Dumars, Kobe, Robertson fight it out for #5. If Frazier is put int he croup, the bottom three drop a slot. Same with if you consider Hondo a SG.

West over Dumars, West had to carry his team offensively (averaging 40+ at age 26).

01 Michael Jordan (1987-98, 9x All-Defense, 9x First Team, 1x DPOY)
02 Michael Cooper (1980-88, 8x All-Defense, 5x First Team, 1x DPOY)
03 Sidney Moncrief (1981-86, 5x All-Defense, 4x First team, 2x DPOY)
04 Jerry West (1968-73, 5x All-Defense, 4x First Team)
05 Kobe Bryant* (1999-07, 7x All-Defense, 5x First Team)

* Active Player.

Bowen does a better job on Kobe than any player in the league, which has to be worth the price of admission to any list of top defensive guards.

Should be way "defensive big guards" ie guys who guarded the opponent's larger guard more often than not?

Solves the PG/SG debate because PG is an offensive role, being a 2 defensively tends to be more size based. Defensively Magic for example would be a 2/3 most of the time.

Jordan
Dumars
Moncrief
Alvin Robertson
Cooper

(Nate Mcmillian played both PG/SG but was a top notch defender)
