All Youth vs All Veteran

Post#1 » by J-Mezzy » Fri Mar 21, 2008 8:23 pm

All 23 and under vs all 30 and over

Youth
Paul
Ellis
James
Bosh
Howard

Vets
Nash
Ginobili
Pierce
KG
Duncan

I almost threw Kobe in there since he'll soon be 30, but then it would be quite easy to go with the oldies.

The young ones dominate the perimeter, but the combo of Garnett and Duncan is dead scary. I think Dwight can play with Duncan, but Garnett would give Bosh nightmares.

I'll still go with the young one, Paul+Lebron+Howard is as good as it gets. The amount of lobs Dwight would get from both of these guys would be surreal.

I go for the Old Cats.

Paul/Nash will go badly for both teams because neither can really stop the other, especially with the threats they both have on their teams.

Ellis/Manu is very much in the favor of the Old Cats because Ellis isn't THAT good and Manu's a legit All-Star.

Ellis is an up-and-comer but he doesn't have a lot of range, isn't a terribly good defender and isn't a great playmaker (though with Paul, that's obviously not a huge issue). By contrast, Manu's a very multidimensional threat and not undersized, either, though Ellis' size and speed are an advantage against Manu. Manu's range, passing and his ability to work with the bigs all play in his favor, though.

James/Pierce is obviously in favor of the young guys but Pierce will make Lebron work because he drives so aggressively. With the sort of help he'd have on this team, he'd be free to work a lot more, though James' improved defense is certainly showing in Pierce's splits against the Cavs this year. Anyway, this one is pretty clearly in the camp of the young guys.

The frontcourt is very much in favor of the old guys, even though Dwight is very good.

Garnett smokes Bosh in terms of defense, passing and his versatility; even though Bosh is a good rebounder and a good scorer, he's a weak defender and not as good as KG in any other aspect of the game.

Duncan is a VASTLY superior defender to Howard and a much better passer to boot, far better at facilitating ball movement and handling advanced NBA defenses, etc.

Ultimately, I see Paul and James doing really well but this one would come down to execution and the old guys do that a lot better.

Obviously, if you talk about a single game, anything could happen but I think the old guys would win out over a 7-game series.

I don't see how the old guys don't win this...

Obviously the defense on the "old guy" team is miles better with the best defensive frontcourt of all time. Add to that Manu and PP and your only liability is Nash.

On offense you could actually make an argument that each "young guy" is better than his counterpart (of course it would be a disputable argument for all of them except PP-LBJ). However the way that team is set up is just too perfect. You have possibly the most polished/best passing low post player with his perfect counterpart in the high post. Around them you have one of the best 3 point shooters of all time and two other excellent 3 point shooters... all of whom are deadly slashers and finishers with excellent midrange games.
