the three bigs vs. the three smalls

Post#1 » by ronnymac2 » Mon Apr 28, 2008 9:58 pm

Okay, shaq, duncan, kg, vs. jordan, magic, and bird, which combo would u want to start a team with? They are all in their primes, and have relatively equal surrounding casts. for example, the bigs would need a pg who knows how to get them the ball effectively and can shoot; lets say chauncey billups. the smalls, though all effective in the post, have a very good, smart postscorer; lets say kevin mchale. (note: im not comparing billups to mchale; just giving them as examples of good compliments for the different combos.) I feel like this comparison of these 3 bigs vs. these 3 smalls is good because they won't just matchup up against each other individually...shaq not guardin mj individually, bird not guardin duncan individually, etc... And i know bird, magic, and jordan is the holy trinity, but can u really not take 3 dominant 7-footers? so who u take as a core first, the 3 bigs or 3 smalls?

Easily Shaq-KG-Duncan combo. KG can play the three effectively. All they need are 2 guards who spread the floor and play D.

The three smalls.
1. Competitive spirit / imposition of will
2. If the game is remotely close in the 4th, its will be won by MJ/Magic/Bird
3. Will be a lot of fun to watch. It will be Showtime x3 during the regular season.

Add some rebounders with good defense to the front court; preferably able to finish off an assist too.

The Smalls, KG can't play the 3 effectively anymore, hasn't been able to for a few years now.... the 3 smalls are ridiculously efficient for scorers, and are much better offensive threats than Duncan and Garnett, who are only going to crowd each other in the high post.......

Jordan > Bird >= Magic > Shaq > Duncan > KG

I'm going with the three smalls. Plus, KG would have to play at SF, which isn't as good a fit for him as it was for Bird. (Both were natural PFs.)

As long as I got a solid post defender (in McHale, I certainly get that), I don't worry about matchup problems too much. And as good as these teams are defensively, the offense is just much better--and the smalls can always go to Hack-a-Shaq to slow down offensive production of the bigs.

I'm also going with the 3 smalls. You don't want KG at SF, he'd be coming off the bench. Magic, MJ and Bird could all start, their games would mesh well, and they would pretty much destroy everyone if you just find a defensive PF and a defensive C. You can get decent defensive bigs reasonably cheap if they have poor offense. For example, using current players, you could easily get:

C - Pryzbilla
PF - Varejao
SF - Bird
SG - MJ
PG - Magic

With a decent bench, that team loses to nobody.

If you use bigs that can play like smalls: KG, Dirk, ???

Things get skewed when you use the GOAT in anything thought.
