'92-01 Hakeem on the Lakers from 1980-1989 ....

Post#1 » by JordansBulls » Fri May 30, 2008 4:12 pm

Usually we see threads where it is replace Duncan with Garnett or Jordan with Kobe or Hakeem with Shaq and yada yada y yada, however here is a different one.

Let's say you were to replace Kareem from 1980-1989 on the Lakers with Hakeem Olajuwon from 1992-2001, how many titles do the Lakers win in the 80's?

Note: I tried to make it similar in that they both were old and as productive at the same time to make it a bit more fair. We also know that that wasn't Kareem in his prime at that time anymore either.

Trying to see if Hakeem from that time period on the Lakers would still produce the same amount of titles.

Kareem at the time was close to out of his prime in the 80s. I think they would have produced more, Hakeem in his prime was a defensive and offensive beast and could of filled the role of Kareem. It would have been very interesting watching Magic and Hakeem that would have been a very interesting combo. Hakeem was quicker and much more athletic, and that dream shake would have worked wonders.

Kareem still won MVP in 1980 and Finals MVP in 1985. Hakeem won his MVP in 1994 and his finals MVP's in 1994 and 1995. Kareem in 1989 was about as productive as Hakeem in 2001. I tried to make the comparison as close as possible even though I know that Kareem was better. Just trying to see how the Lakers would have worked with Hakeem with him getting older and older past his prime.

If you put it like that then, Hakeem's efficiency wore off fast, when he was out of his prime. His prime IMO lasted from the season he stepped foot on court (1984) till about 1997 (his last 20 ppg + season, and as an overall player). His scoring dropped, and as he begun to age his quickness wore off, and he down to the end of his career. They may have won the same amount of championships, but maybe.
