I'm not a huge fan of either guy, but I'd rather have Baron. Arenas is the better pure scorer, but Baron the superior defender/playmaker. From the pg position that's kinda important.

Arenas puts up a lot of shots and is pretty efficient.

Baron puts up less shots and is a lot less efficient.

Baron is a better natural playmaker to me, hands down....

Davis might be a better defender when he cares, but he doesn't care often enough to sway a decision.

I dunno, both guys probably shoot too much, but at least Arenas has a nice TS%, and he gets to the line an awful lot.

I'll take Arenas.

I'll take Baron. He can score and he's a great playmaker. Plus he does it for WAY less.

Arenas is younger, and has more left in him them Baron.
Baron is the better "PG", but Arenas is by far the better Scorer, he can shoot it better then him
and has more explosivneness in his game.
Baron is a better rebounder, and defender when he cares, and that brings up the issue of him caring, i think Gilbert plays with more heart, and Baron plays more about his fame....

For how long they both are going to last, I'd take Arenas, as far as money is concencered i'll take Baron

Arenas is the better scorer, but BD does everything much better, including being a much more athletic and stronger player, which IMO are his strengths.

unless you think Baron has some huge defensive or intangible edge, you really have to go with Arenas, advanced stats and on court impact, offensive(and sometimes defensive) ratings, PER, on/off all favor him.

Agreed.

And a counter-point to those who are using the contract as reasoning -- what about age? Baron is almost 30 years old. Gilbert just turned 26. There's a 3.5yr difference here. That's pretty darn significant when you're comparing two very similar players.

However, if the question is "who would you rather have for one season if contracts are taken into account?", it's Baron Davis.

great post by miller..explains my feelings..I think Gilbert is definitely the better player, but right now, I'd take Baron's contract..I think Davis is one of the most overrated players in the NBA though..

I do give Baron a huge edge in both defense and playmaking. The defensive edge as much due to Arenas' lack there of.

Scoring is about the least important thing I look for from the pg position, so the fact Arenas does that better really isn't that crucial in my eyes. Hell, I think Arenas is really just an undersized 2-guard. Baron is just a shot chucking pg lol. Pick your poison. :-)
