If Mcgrady were to win a ring with the Rockets...

Post#1 » by etopn23 » Fri Aug 1, 2008 4:15 am

where would he rank all time?

If he were to win more than one ring where would he rank?

IMO since 05-06 he's had the roughest stretch of injured years since Vince Carter. His value is probably at an all-time low atm but he has more talent around him now than he's ever had in his career, so a ring is likely. In my eyes at his best he def. was at the level of some of the greats (I'm a homer, I know) but he hasn't really consistently been at that level since his second year in Houston (injuries).... it's hard to rank him because of that.

Just wanted to see what the general consensus was on RealGM.

if he were to win more than one ring, at a time when kobe has no excuse not to, i'd expect is ranking to be around kobe's.

I don't know man, thats tough to say, Kobe has accomplished soo much more around the league. Saying this though IMHO he is no doubt a top 50 player of all time, but it could raise is rank VERY high, especially if he has a VERY good year, and does VERY good in the playoffs (which I doubt he will have a problem with since he has shown up EVERY year and his stats rank among the very best with 29/6/6).

Tough call though, this season actually was the first year I've seen A LOT of athleticism out of him since his first year in Houston. And thats due to the fact that his back problems are fixed, and thats something a lot of people still don't know, but with McGrady if its not the back then its the shoulder, if its no the shoulder its the knee, and if its not the knee its something else, lol. I think he should have a great season next year, especially after having his entire body problems fixed (knee, back, and shoulder). Lol, hopefully he will prove everyone wrong, but its not all on him, the everyone else and most importantly the big fella has to stay healthy for it all to work out. I'd rank him probably top 40, I'd say higher but I don't want to start upsetting people, and if he'd win more than one I'd say probabley top 35 maybe top 30, but still there are soo many great players even at the 30 mark. 2 time scoring champ, 7 time all star, 7 time all NBA team, he has the resume, but he needs the rings.

it would definitely change his ranking and make him a HOFer, but it's difficult to say..McGrady's ranking would take a lot of thought, since he's never really discussed in this type of way..this is the first time I've ever seen a thread questioning McGrady on an all-time list..

McGrady is already one of the greatest SGs ever (shoulda made the ESPN top 10 list) .. 2 titles puts him close to where Kobe currently is all-time .....similar paths..Tmac got his individual accomplishments first and titles later...Kobe got his titles first and individual achievements later.

Tracy is a special player in the league who currently is probably top 20. There was a 3-4 year stretch where he was a top 5 player, but injuries have slowed him down a little.
Last year he looked good and healthy when he played and was the backbone of that long winning streak which he will most likely be credited for when we look back on it.
However statistically speaking it was probably his worst year in the past 7 in a year where it seemed like scoring was easy.
Im a big fan, and i hope that it was just an aberration and not a sign of decline.

As far as his ranks go, there is no way that he could be considered top 50 all time right now, but 2 scoring titles will put him in the top 100. If T-Mac can still average his career numbers for 5 years and win a ring, he will definetly catapult in the top 30.
2 more rings and 5 years of great play and you have to put him in the late teens around where Isaiah Thomas is

I based what I said on what people voted on the realgm all time thread, hes accomplished A LOT in terms of resume.

Yup i agree with that...though clyde for me is like, 20-25, so 1 ring for somebody who isn't even top 30 right now won't get that player in that group and past clyde lol.

I don't even know where T-mac is right now. I think , for the player he was (I count prime a lot in my rankings), he could be top 50 or 60. Without rings, he won't be moving too far up, and will probably stay where he is.

If, however, he leads his team to a lot of wins, wins a title or 2, and maybe a finals mvp or 2, and keeps giving you similar stats in the reg. season and playoffs for a few years, he's in the top 30, absolutely no doubt. Probably in the top 25, in Drexler territory.

I think a finals MVP would put him in Clyde territory. There pretty similar in terms of playmaking, defense, rebounding, and scoring, but Clyde is just a much more efficient scorer.

If McGrady won a ring, he'd be above Drexler; Drexler didn't win a ring until he was the second option; McGrady still runs the Houston squad, he's still the main man, even with Yao alongside him.

Drexler made the Finals twice with Portland and then finally won alongside Dream but if T-Mac leads Houston to a title, I'd definitely rank him over Drexler.

I think we should wait until one of his teams wins a playoff series before we talk about him winning a ring -- let's not get ahead of ourselves here. But yeah, if he ever does play a main role in bringing them a championship, his legacy will be dramatically changed for the better.

Considering how important post play is in the postseason, its quite possible that Yao would be the man on any Houston team that won an NBA Finals. So I don't think you can go crowning McGrady the definite Finals MVP of the Rockets. Especially with this team's volatile health situation.

I agree with Malinhion..

McGrady is still a top 15 player, but I don't think he can carry a team any more in a 7-game series vs. playoff teams..he'll put up good numbers, but it'll probably have to be on a high-volume amount of shots..he doesn't have the same explosiveness, so I think it's far better to have McGrady taking less shots, since the more he takes, the more likely they'll be difficult/contested/long shots..he's still a great playmaker, but I think Houston has to run it through Yao if they wanna make it far in the playoffs..McGrady is much more suited to play the #2 now IMO(like Pierce in the playoffs) and he seems like he would be fine with that role..

the finals is all about matchups though, so finals MVP could definitely happen..

Definitely below Kobe. Somewhere low in top 30.
