If your team could produce results similar to the following

Post#1 » by JordansBulls » Mon Aug 4, 2008 8:59 pm

I posted this in the Bulls forum, but I'm curious on what most fans think as well if this was your team.

I was just thinking about how good the Dallas Mavericks have been this decade. They have won 52+ games in their last 7 years and have won 50+ games every year.

2000-2001 - 53-29 - lost in semifinals
2001-2002 - 57-25 - lost in semifinals
2002-2003 - 60-22 - lost in conference finals
2003-2004 - 52-30 - lost in 1st round
2004-2005 - 58-24 - lost in semifinals
2005-2006 - 60-22 - lost in nba finals
2006-2007 - 67-15 - 1st round exit
2007-2008 - 51-31 - 1st round exit

or

Would you rather have the success like the Miami Heat this decade where you win a title and are mediocore and lottery bound the other years?

2000-01 NBA Miami Heat 50 32 Lost 1st Round
2001-02 NBA Miami Heat 36 46 No Playoffs
2002-03 NBA Miami Heat 25 57 No Playoffs
2003-04 NBA Miami Heat 42 40 Lost in Semifinals
2004-05 NBA Miami Heat 59 23 Lost Conference Finals
2005-06 NBA Miami Heat 52 30 Won NBA Title
2006-07 NBA Miami Heat 44 38 Lost 1st Round
2007-08 NBA Miami Heat 15-67 No Playoffs

Let's say from 2009 forward you could produce the following results, which one would you choose?

Would you Prefer the continuous success of the Dallas Mavericks since 2001 or would you Prefer the success of the Miami Heat since 2001 where they win a Title one year

To put it simple, no amount of "good, but we'll get it next year!" seasons match to the joy and feeling you get out of winning a championship.

You dont want to be remembered as the team that was close every year and NEVER won anything.

Therefore, i'll go with the Heat.

Miami Heat. I have suffered as a loyal Heat fan through the downseasons. Thankfully, we have one of the few FOs in the league that can actually manage a rebuild in a decent amount of time. The current squad already looks to be gunning for playoff wins and camping on the 2010 free agent market.

Nothing beats having a title.

I would rather have the 1st scenario because of the fact I've seen us win enough titles in my lifetime to be satisfied. I would want my team to be elite yearly knowing we have a great chance to win it then just a 2-3 year wonder and fall off.
Also it is much easier to watch games and they are more enjoyable for a 82 game season knowing you have a contender yearly and an actual good team playing.

well but doesn't it hurt everytime you'll head into the postseason and not winning it all? I mean I don't want to be a Mavs fan or Kings fan in the past decade. they had such promising teams but they couldn't win it all (I don't want to start a trend about the circumstances it happened). so I'd rather take the Heat way and win it for one season to get this feeling that you won it all. plus for teams such as the Mavs or Kings it is that they never won a title before (I only the count the Kings as the Kings from Sacramento) so it must hurt even more. for the Heat on the other hand it was the 1st title and I think that (possible) losing for years to come (which I don't hope for them) isn't as bad if you just won the title a few years ago. knowing that you won your very first title makes losing for years okay IMO (especially if you face some bad luck like the Heat did).

btw: I hope I didn't insult any Mavs or Kings fan. I actually liked those teams and I wish they had won the titles back then so I hope you don't think I'm trolling

oh and before I forgot Kno summed it up very well before.

I guess we approached this question with a different mindset then, because I wasnt thinking of teh Lakers and their past. I just saw it from a neutral team's standpoint regardless of players and history.

BTW, when you said "knowing we have a great chance to win it", I thought the whole point was to take a pre-determined route? I mean, the "chance to win it" wont ever happen. You pretty much know you'll be eliminated and never win it all. At least thats how I read your OP. I understood it as youll be good, but never win anything (Mavs), or, yourll be mediocre, but be guaranteed a championship one year (heat).

Gotta be the championships. The history books rarely list the "nearly" teams. Except Dallas will be down for for losing to 8th in the 1st round lol.

Heat. There's really no question about it, nothing is greater than a Championship in the NBA.

Give me the one that gets you a championship and top picks. WHy bother with the one that you win nothing and just get old.

If you have to pick after the fact, then Heat of course. But if you have to pick only knowing the rosters that started each year, then Dallas. Because they are going to have many more chances to go at the title. And doing it all over with similar talent (which is the premise in the title), might produce different results.

Give me sustained excellence, no question about it. A few years removed from the championship, win or lose, what you'll remember is having enjoyed a great team playing great basketball. At least that's how I feel about it.

Consistent success is nice(I enjoy the fact that the Suns have historically always been competitive), but we're still thirsting for a title. We've got a collective fever, and the only prescription is the championship we've been wanting for 40 years. Yeah, the 17 fifty-win seasons are nice, as are the 8 trips to the WCF and 2 trips to The Finals, but we've come up short time after time, and I think I speak for a large majority of Suns fans when I say that I wouldn't mind being a lottery team for 3-4 years if it got us a championship just once.
