Yeah, I would not put Pierce in the top 3, and I am a celtic fan. He has a history of making some pretty ill advised passes.

By the numbers:

PG
A/TO: Calderson, Brevin Knight, Chris Paul (Antonio Daniels if Knight didn't play enought to qualify)
A/Min: Nash, Paul, Deron Williams

SG
A/TO: Roy, Quentin Ross, Jason Terry
A/Min: Wade, Iverson, McGrady

SF:
A/TO: Tayshaun Prince, Luke Walton, LeBron (Grant Hill if Walton didn't play enough)
A/Min: LeBron, Turkoglu, Kirlenko

PF:
A/TO: Foster, Diaw, Garnett (Odom if Foster didn't play enough)
A/Min: Diaw, Garnett, Matt Barnes (Nowitski if Barnes didn't play enough)

C:
A/TO: Camby, Gasol, Brad Miller
A/Min: Miller, CAmby, Gasol

As you can see, the A/Min brings up more of the guys you think of as great playmakers and a few guys aren't getting the love their stats indicate (Camby particularly -- when did he turn passer?)

People really need to reconsider having Calderon on their lists, he's a good playmaker, but a passer? He'll find you wide open on the perimeter, and if there isn't anyone near you, inside the paint. Guys like Nash, Paul, and Kidd will MAKE you open underneath the basket and give you a gorgeous pass, Calderon doesn't do that. With that said I think people need to consider TJ Ford also. He is definitely up there with the elites in terms of court vision. I recall a game against Chicago where he racked up like 16 assists in 21 minutes and was second in the league only to Nash in assists per minute (in 06-07). He could be averaging a lot more assists but he doesn't look to pass it as much as the top point guards in the league do.

Kidd is still the best passer in the game IMO. He makes people look stupid just by the gestures of his body.

I'd take Turk over AK. Turkoglu runs the Magic's offense, and is a far superior passer to Jameer Nelson. He's one of the few viable point-forwards in the league.

Yeah Turk is easily a better passer then AK, his passing skills are extraordinary for his size. IMO its one of the reasons he was in the top of the league for most 4th quarter points, he keeps the ball movement going and running very smoothly.

again, is this based on efficiency or ability? because Kirilenko has made some amazing passes over the years, especially considering his size..I agree about Turkoglu making smarter passes for his offense, but again, what is this based on?..

if it's efficiency, obviously Calderon should be on the list..but I don't think he's an elite passer in terms of ability..

Im going by passing ability

PG
Kidd- The man's court vision is simply amazing.
Paul- Close to Kidd but not quite there yet
Nash- Need I say more?

SG
Wade- He's a PG in a SG's body
Carter- He has terrfic court vision for a guy his size and speed
AI- One of the better passers in the league when he makes up his mind to feed people.

SF
LBJ- I don't have to say anything about his court vision
T-Mac- Better passer and player maker than people give him credit for
Hedo- I wanted to go to AK-47 here but I changed my mind

PF-
KG- One of the best passing big men ever.
TD- Underrated passer but good none the les.

C
Brad Miller- Best passing center in the league right now
Shaq- Old, but still capable
Bogut- Very good court vision for a center

Copperhead wrote:Which is why I was suprised to see 82games.com has him making about 200 bad passes. Most of his turnovers came from bad passes rather than ball handling turnovers or offensive fouls. This is also probably why he is at the top of the turnover list for point guards. I do consider him a good passer though. Jason Kidd is still a relatively good passer at the pg position as well.

You have to factor in how central the player is to his offense as well as the style being played. The degree of difficulty Nash faces makes him look more turnover prone than really is. Consider how dependent the Suns are on his offense, and yet still turnovers aren't something they are particularly struggling with.Nash leads an absolutely chaotic system which functions like crap without him, and has made it one of the great offensive dynasties in history. He's damn good.

Now though, that doesn't mean I'd dismiss the bad passes completely. I'm particularly blown away by Paul's efficiency. I'm terribly curious to see if he can keep up and improve what he's already done.

Regarding what others have said about Kidd: If you want to separate passing ability from passing effectiveness, I can see saying Kidd's got the highest passing ability. It is amazing how he can do his job when he's no threat to score. But in terms of effectiveness, it's absolutely dragging him down.

I'll vote: Paul, Nash, Kidd with the clarification that Kidd wouldn't be really in the running for my top 3 choices if I wanted a point guard for my team right now.

Ford deserves a mention; if i recall, he was second to nash in assists per 48 last year.

KG is better but it's really debatable nowadays; you can't go wrong with either one. A 7-foot guy driving to the paint and being sandwiched by 2-3 defenders yet somehow able to make a crisp pass to the open man is a lot more difficult than drawing doubles at the post where you have a better vantage point.
