Re: GOAT COACHES -- PC Board Edition
Vote Phil Jackson
Phil not only had a great system in the triangle but he easily has the best resume at coaching personalities in history with MJ/Pippen, Shaq/Kobe relationships being two of the most complicated for stars ever, and some of the biggest wild cards mentally in the league like Rodman, Artest, Bynum, Odom, etc. Coaching a team to a 3rd straight title is highly difficult as they are frequently emotionally and physically burnt and he did it twice, along with 3 straight finals in the case of the Kobe Pau teams. Separating him from Popovich is there is little to no years that are missed opportunities to win a title, he only has two series where he lost with HCA (04 finals and 11 Mavs sweep), and never lost when leading 1-0.
The only case against him would be Auerbach who was ahead of his time. However the Celtics went on to still win with Russell as player coach, and it can be argued half of Auerbach's genius was as GM. Phil did it in harder eras.

If we were to keep going, he'd have a good shot at top 10 for me. A man I have a lot of respect for as a coach.

I see Chuck Daly as similar to Mike D, he was a guy who had an enormous stylistic influence on the NBA, most would argue for harm

Someone correct me if I am mistaken, but Jackson was not the author/creator of the triangle system, was he? I believe that was the invention of Tex Winter.

Absolutely true, but beyond that:
Phil Jackson's motion-offense philosophy was heavily influenced by his time playing for the Red Holzman Knicks.
The lineage from the '40s-50s Rochester Royals (where Holzman was a player) to the '70s Knicks (where Holzman coached and Jackson was a player) to the '90s Chicago Bulls (where Jackson was a coach and Kerr was a player) to the '10s-20s Warriors (where Kerr is a coach) is possibly my favorite coaching tree in NBA history.
