Inspired by a thread about misleading awards (and also something I've thought about before), but All Star games are often used as an entry point into player analysis.
Who are the players that have received too many All Star appearances, and who has received too few?
Joe Johnson, for example, probably wasn't a top 25ish player 7 times in his career, and Kevin Johnson probably deserved more than 3 (as evidenced by his 5 All NBA teams). Which players have the biggest discrepancies?
What I'm looking for here is, "in a fair league, how many times did X have an end-of-season that would have been a top 25ish season, and how different is this from their actual All Star count?"

Players that deserved more/less All Star games
I use a lot of parentheses when I post (it's a bad habit)

The name that comes to mind the quickest is Reggie Miller. He was only a 5x all star when he probably should have been an 8-12 one. Same with all nba teams. Stockton only made 10 in his career too.

Rodman only made 2 despite leading the league in rebounding from 92-98 and winning a 2nd straight dpoy and was 2nd in rebounding in 91.
Kevin Willis made 92 but could have made 93 and 94 also.

Re: Players that deserved more/less All Star games
Manu Ginóbili and Reggie Miller lead the pack, IMO.
Pau deserved more for a long time, but he got those couple Eastern gift selections to make up for it.
For less, obviously Kobe, also nearly every weak-ish Eastern star in the 00s and 10s (JoJo, Chris Bosh...).

This place is a cesspool of mindless ineptitude, mental decrepitude, and intellectual lassitude. I refuse to be sucked any deeper into this whirlpool of groupthink sewage. My opinions have been expressed. I'm going to go take a shower.

Some of the longevity monsters (Kobe, Dirk, Kareem, Julius) certainly didn't deserve some of their last appeariances.

Demarr didn't deserve to have so many all-star game

Kevin Duckworth Denver should have been in one. How that early ‘90s Blazers’ defense was good with him at the 5 is a miracle.

Re: Players that deserved more/less All Star games
Terry Porter having as many (2) as teammate Kevin Duckworth seems weird
Rudy Gobert and Marc Gasol are/were two of the most impactful defenders of their eras yet they only have 3 apiece
Larry Nance with 3 feels low given how good he was for how long
Baron Davis only has 2 though he did have an up and down career
Yao Ming is the first name I think of with too many. He had twice as many allstar nods (8) as seasons played with at least 58 games (4). He played 8 seasons total with his final being all of 5 games

Duckworth was cool to watch, but he wasn't particulary good even offensively and defensively he was poor - as simple as that. Imagine Al Jefferson who can't really score that well and you'll get Duckworth.

I mean ... and Duckworth died at 44 so I don't want to be mean, and perspective and all that but ... even if Jefferson were a worse scorer ...
Duckworth was much worse: on the boards (12.5 TRB% to AJ's 16.9 TBS%)
on assists (9.7 assist% to 4.9 - assist percentage isn't a perfect tool but should suffice here)
is turnover economy part of the scoring (8.2 tov% to 13.6)?
in that he was a bigger dropper in the playoffs (from a low baseline Duckworth among the worst for that in regard to box production ... and he isn't a guy playing playoff minutes in his worst seasons ... 94 and on).

Yeah, I don't want to be too harsh on the man, as he was quite exciting player to watch with his soft touch in the paint and one handed finishes... but he wasn't all-star.
