I can't lie, I could use more breaks and/or less overlap in this project. As it is now there are almost always 2 active threads going, and if I step away from either for a day I could easily miss 8 - 10 pages of posts (that happened with the '06 and '07 threads). I hate missing out on good convo, but I'm going to have to cut back soon. If we could at the least wait until one thread is done before starting the next, or maybe have an off day after every couple of years, it would help. There's no way I can maintain this pace for weeks nonstop, let alone months.

How different would the voting results look if we removed all votes for a home team's player? I look at the (close) results and can't help but think it's making a difference in a group of 23.

I think there is always going to be some level of bias for the home team/player, but the good thing is that at least we're having active debates, which is far better than the media awards which don't call anyone's votes into question.

Okay, we'll take a break after '99-00.

What are people's thoughts on the overlapping threads? We're doing it that way now to speed things along, thinking the quicker we get through this, the less momentum we'll lose - but if it's leading to burn out, we should consider changing it.

I think home team isn't much of an issue, it's favorite players/hated players - and there's no way to know who each of the posters roots for, hates -

Well, it is going to make a difference. If people feel strongly enough about it, I'll really make an effort to get everyone's home teams.

Part of my reluctance, is that I don't think there's anything we can do to really make a better voting group. We'd need signifiantly more people involved, and I've never seen a project bigger than this one work on RealGM - let alone one that would last for months.

My 2 cents:
Overlapping threads are killing the older threads - most of the people flock to the new thread, and the discussion in the old thread gets stiffled -

Also, I think it might be better to remove the overlap and then not take a break - because I personally think a break will kill all the momentum.

This is also true. I'm a Laker fan, but I don't think anyone's worried of me being a homer for the Lakers. On the other hand, I do tend to argue for and against certain players more often than random - some people probably do take my opinion on those players with a grain of salt.

That said though, there really are people who aren't objective toward anything on their team, so the idea to try to mitigate that is not unreasonable.

What about starting a new thread on the same day the previous one finishes. Monday morning to Wednesday morning, Wednesday afternoon to Friday afternoon. A nice, tight schedule, with no real overlap and no need for a break with weekends off.

Doc, Would your spreadsheet be capable of putting together every voter's voting record or is that info not in there ?

I think like this schedule better.

OK, I didn't have anything to do at work today, so I banged out most of the sortable data views.

LINK: http://www.dolem.com/poy

I still have some work to do in terms of showing what each individual player has done (years that they received votes) and allowing yearly selection, but everything else works.

So that there's no question about manipulating results, the data files are located here:

Voters: http://www.dolem.com/poy/data/voters.csv
Seasons: http://www.dolem.com/poy/data/seasons.csv
Players: http://www.dolem.com/poy/data/players.csv
Results: http://www.dolem.com/poy/data/results.csv

Feedback and suggestions are welcome. I can't promise that I'll be able to fulfill every request, but I'll do what I can.

Edit: To clarify, the page is completely data driven at this point meaning that all information is coming out of the data files (with exception to point/share calculations).

I'm not tracking it on that level of detail unfortunately.

Now I am keeping record of my own votes, and would encourage others to do the same just for your own benefit. If there's interest we can compare records later on.

Yeah, I'm saving every 'voting' post I make in these threads in a word document. Actually already did up to 99-00 on it.

It looks great! But you should take a look at the calculation of the shares, because they are not correct. Adding up the shares for James gives me 2.239, but you have him listed with 2.4496; for Bryant I get 2.196, but you have him with 2.6709. Others are also wrong. I couldn't find the pattern.
