12 of the 15 worst team defensive ratings have occurred this year. It isn't because NBA teams don't try on defense. Contrary to media reports, and as everyone on the board knows, team strategies are more sophisticated than ever. Rather the combination of shooting, 3 point line distance and NBA rules for carrying, traveling, moving screens, defense simply can't work the way it used to.

Whether the NBA should do anything about this depends on the impact on the business. But if no changes are made we are going to have league average defensive ratings in the 120s by the end of the decade.

Agreed, and I do believe the bolded is the main reason, though the superior and prolific 3-point shooting exacerbates the issue that defenses league-wide face.

IIRC, the change in the way the league wanted the game to be played occurred after the last TV rights deal was signed. I believe they are up soon, and so we shall see if the NBA heads made the correct decision approximately 6-8 years ago.

Personally, I (the useless sample size of one) would like to see today's players - the greatest collection of talent the game has ever seen, by far - in an environment where the league-wide ORTGs are within the 1980-2016 Equilibrium Era range. Game 5 of last year's NBA Finals was IMHO the greatest NBA game of the past 40 years. The playoffs (play-in games included) as a whole were amazing. Again, this is just me, but I personally would like the current talent to play in a regular season environment where defenses aren't handicapped.

That is a bold and wild claim. How come you think that?

It was 48 minutes of competitive basketball. It wasn't pretty. Jokic's defensive rebounding and the pressure he put on Miami pushing the ball in the 3rd quarter is something I won't forget. Back and forth. Guys diving on the floor. Likable players on both sides. It was phenomenal basketball imo.

Saw they just added player awards into the "Per Game" table on basketball reference like they have for baseball. Pretty cool. Naturally some guys like Lebron and Jordan have a pretty insane list of accolades now.

I don't have anything original to say but I think people are going to appreciate Lebron more when he is gone. That isn't always true for ATGs. Some fade.

But with Lebron people are going to really appreciate the fact he had an insane peak and played forever. The later is going to be noticed when no one comes close for decades.

Wrong. He's going to be exposed soon after he retires

Feels like a two-man race between Leon Rose and Brad Stevens (if the Celtics win the title) for this board’s executive of the year. I think the actual award is probably locked to Leon Rose by now; not sure whether that has odds on it or anything, but I would feel comfortable betting a fair bit on it.

It'd be funny if the Clippers-Suns met in the 1st round of the playoffs again.

If everyone is healthy, that might be the most stacked 1st round match-up of all time in the playoffs? Both teams are loaded with talent.

You have a great deal of work to do on your understanding if you think he will be "exposed" when he retires.

Like many, he will see the shine of his star fade some as the years roll by, for sure, but Lebron has absolutely been one of the greatest players in this history of the sport. If you can't recognize that, then you are letting agenda interfere with your ability to appreciate the game.

Feels like we blew our shot in the 22 finals..............East is so much stronger now

Cavs look like behemoths after the shooting they got. Bucks with Dame. Knicks finally have a good Fo and have hit it out the park in trades and signings. They are a conteder Imo. Pacers w/ Hali and Siakam. Miami Zombies I dont care how bad they play in Rs you know those mofos will be there in playoff. Maxey As Sixers Embiid is hurt but should be back. Banchero and Franz Orlando w/ one of deepest defenses. Maga Isaac looks like a gamebreaker. Hawks have started figuring it out..... Brooklyn looks like a different team w/ Ben.....

If you compare the top 8 to 10 from each conference................im not sure East isnt better now. Best conference has been in years...........

Celtics are winning non-garbage time minutes by over 10 points. That's easily the most out of any team. Celtics fans have the least reason to doom. https://www.pbpstats.com/team-leverage-summary/nba?Season=2023-24&Leverage=Medium,High,VeryHigh

I mean, I am obviously not desperate for a Celtics' title, but very strange to read this post when they're close to 10 SRS and the Bucks and the Sixers, the two other biggest Eastern contenders over the last few years, are dysfunctional and badly coached and just lost their star for a long stretch, respectively.

The Knicks are a solid contender now imo yes but as for the others... I mean you mentioned Brooklyn who are 21-31 and barely .500 even with Simmons.

I think now moreso even than the start of the season, the Celtics look like the prohibitive favorite in the East. The West, well, it's anyone's guess.

Reverse jinx is strong in this post.

The Sixers won't be a factor this season. There's no shot Embiid returns in time to rev up to 100%. The Cavaliers, Pacers, and Knicks are all giant pretenders. They're not serious contenders. The Heat won't pull off another run in the playoffs. Their roster is much worse than last season.

The Bucks are the only threat, but you guys own them and their defense has cratered this season.

The West is still clearly better than the East. There's proven championship cores in the West. I mean the Lakers and Warriors are in the play-in at the moment. I'd favor them in a series over team out East sans the Celtics/Bucks(and the Sixers with a healthy Embiid).

I don't think the West has ever been this loaded.

Walker Kessler is a real presence defensively, and not just right around the rim

Very impressed with this guy, funny Utah went straight from Gobert to him

The West had a 63.3% win % against the East that season. Spurs+Timberwolves+Lakers+Kings+Mavericks were all awesome that year. Pistons and Pacers were really the only good teams in the East that year. 6 out of the 7 worst teams in the league that year were in the East

Houston has gone from one of the worst defenses in the league last season to top 5 so far this season

What's the story? Udoka? Dillon Brooks?
