I'm hoping that the report on Knecht is not true.
Dude doesn't has zero responsibilities and is having a hard time mentally dealing with the trade and back out?

Surely that's wrong, I thought he wasn't playing because there is potentially a dispute on the trade.

I don't think that's a big deal. We have Luka, Reaves, Vincent and in his current form, Goodwin ahead of him in the rotation. We can afford him sitting out a few games.

In terms of the mental part: it can signal that he is not very strong mentally, but we don't expect him to be our future leader. Even if he doesn't handle change well, he can be a good basketball player.

I read that. Listen, it's not easy, and it's his first time dealing with the business of the NBA, so let's give him that. If it goes beyond needing to process for a few days, that's a problem, and at that point, you don't want that kind of person in the locker room anyway. As Kobe would say, "Soft."

I assume we move him this summer in a Center deal

He has no role here right now, too poor of a defender

A very streaker shooter, but can do some on ball scoring/passing and cutting

We need a guy like Goodwin more than him honestly

Guards: Luka, AR, Gabe, Goodwin

Forwards: Bron, DFS, Vando, Rui

Centers: Hayes, Len

10 man rotation

You're writing off a rookie who's figuring out his role and is signed cheap the next number of years, who's got a valuable skillset and good room for development, for a journeyman who's played for four teams in four years and has only played two games with the Lakers?

I’m not saying to cut him lol

But yes his role isn’t very valuable right now

He’s a horrific defender, too streaky of a shooter to justify the bad defense

And we need solid energetic defenders around Bron, Luka, AR

If what Goodwin has showed us is real and he can hit 3s and play with effort on defense, that’s a good enough stop gap for Christie’s replacement for this year

Yeah I agree. Knecht is a good finisher and would be ideal on a defensive team that needs some offense.

Christie is the guy Lakers need.

Goodwin is a perimeter defender. Knecht's role and minutes competition has tended to be Rui. I would have moved the latter because of his 18m and he puts too much 2-way responsibility on his frontcourt partner. Never liked stars doing the grafting of low motor roleplayers (they do all that scoring, grab an effin rebound and stay with your man). Same reason Knecht too can be moved eventually but to someone that is actually ready to overpay not some throwaway with 2 valuable first rounders. I think with the Williams trade the Lakers just realized how bad they were getting fleeced. Back and foot injuries are usually lifetime ailments.

Rui is currently a much better player than Knecht

The deals were hard to make this year

What C were we getting for Rui? An aging Capela who is a FA would be the best scenario, but idk if Atlanta would help us since they own our pick

A guy like Claxton would also cost Gabe. Too much depth gone

A cheap young C for Knecht was the best idea

Duran not available
Williams injury issue
Kessler not available

Other option was Sharpe, but DK worth more. So they’re need to add some 2nds

Brother, the Lakers got Luka Doncic, then sick note Mark Williams, two guys no one here saw coming. They were out there, whether or not you or I know them by name, especially if Knecht, 31 and 30 pick were available. Or showcase Knecht for like a month then start a bidding war. It was selling low.

The thing anyway is Luka, as his minutes restriction gets lifted, is going to end up pushing both out of the rotation. Not directly, but because it's going to be hard to carry so many targetable iso defenders

But you’re talking about trades here. Rui may be the better player right now, but I can guarantee you every team out there today would value Knecht more in trade talks.

No Gabe or DFS - defense could be rough tonight.

Yes exactly...

Rui is better for US to win NOW

But Knecht has more trade value to get us others

Both are overrated as win-now assets but Rui's 18m could go to 2 more versatile roleplayers. They don't do enough outside scoring and contribute to the team's biggest weakness. Lebron has needed a dirty work guy all season and that headache doubles now that it's Luka+Lebron. If Knecht was the one making 18m he'd be the one to move easily.

Who would we have gotten for Rui?

There werent TWO 2 way guys

I would have taken KCP for Rui+swap

Werent a lot of options though

Also Rui does do some contributing currently, Knecht cant contribute right now come playoff time it looks like unless he takes a jump and gets more consistent

This is precisely the kind of game you can't have starters struggling to exceed 2 rebounds

Gotta suck playing against the same bad team 2 games in a row. Utah's playing hard af while Lakers are going through the lotions. Missing a bunch of key players too.

Yeah, this is not a surprise. As currently constructed this team simply can't afford to be missing two of their three best defenders.

Len is just completely pointless out there. Doesn't have any effect on rim finishers, and a non-factor at the other end.
