SideshowBob wrote:Wade was playing injured in the 2013 postseason if I remember correctly (even missed a game). His relentless off-ball cutting/curling action during the regular season was a HUGE part of Miami's offensive explosion (they were running a +10 offense from mid-January onwards), and it provided spacing despite his lack of a 3pt shot. After Lebron's improvements in that offseason, Wade's role was probably the 2nd or 3rd biggest factor in driving that offense (collective team 3pt shooting would be the other) The Lebron/Battier/Wade unit was nuclear, they were a net +30 in that stretch and that included an ORTG of 134.4.

Wade playing injured hampered his ability to play that role in the playoffs, and with teams focusing their entire defensive gameplan to prevent Lebron from getting into the lane (with the exception of Indiana, who were comfortable straight manning him up), Miami's spacing was **** up throughout that run, particularly when Lebron/Wade shared the court (unsurprisingly, Lebron's late run in game 6 vs. SAS came when Wade was on the bench and Lebron was surrounded with shooters; Wade's man could no longer cheat off him to help shade/clog the lane, and James was able to parade to the rim).

Check out Lebron's numbers from the Milwaukee and Chicago series, they're relatively underwhelming as well, because they played him the same way. This isn't necessarily bad, because for the most part James was able to take advantage of Miami's plethora of shooters and avoid taking the jumpshots himself. However, quite obviously, San Antonio was best equipped to employ this strategy while not yielding too much on the shooters (particularly when Wade was on the court as well), and thus Lebron not taking those outside shots became a problem (at least until he did started taking them in game 4) and furthermore, were also comfortably the best offensive team Miami ran into, which amplified the problem and lengthened the series.

Pretty much and the only two games where both James/Wade made their open jumpers were games 4 and 7. Game 4 was a blowout for Miami and game 7 was close until the end. LeBron did not or rather was not able to drive to the rim in game 7 like he did for that stretch in game 6 because Miami stuck with Wade and LeBron in that game. LeBron played 45 and Wade played 38 minutes. Most of LeBron's points (including the one that sealed the game) in game 7 came from making his jumpers, not from driving to the rim because the Spurs were packing the paint in that game as well.

Gotbuckets.com has a Four Factors APM that gives offensive/defensive splits. It's multi-year (2015 is currently using data from Feb 2013-Feb 2015, so two-year), so it is interesting to see the trends. Here's how Lebron looks defensively.

Code: Select all

Season   +/-

2005     -1.65
2006     +0.70
2007     +2.75
2008     +1.93
2009     +0.82
2010     +3.46
2011     +2.68
2012     +1.90
2013     +1.63
2014     +1.25
2015     +2.14

Apparently the Cavs have approximately the toughest schedule remaining

Image

I might be a little optimistic, but I think they can put up 20-5 if they can keep the same level of play up. I have them losing to vs. GSW, @HOU, @ ATL, @SAS and vs. MEM. I think they can win the upcoming game in Houston. That would be enough to get the 2nd seed, most likely.... IF they can pull it off

Interesting. Worth nothing though, that of all those teams besides Orlando, the Cavs have the fewest overall games left at 27 (though I believe including today's game at Detroit, they have 25 left). An extra day of rest can make all the difference before a big game.

I'm sticking with my midseason prediction of 53 wins overall, meaning they'd go 18-7 over the remainder of the season. I think that accounts for "expected losses" (can't believe I expect the Cavs to lose at all based on recent play!) and a couple of disappointments here and there, so it may be a bit pessimistic if anything.

3rd seed is still my prediction but Toronto is looking more and more vulnerable...second seed is definitely attainable. I don't really expect them to coast in April due to the tightness of the race for seeds 2-5, so hopefully they keep their feet on the pedal and enter the postseason with a ton of momentum.

Edit: At this point, I wouldn't be surprised to see both the Bulls and Cavs overtake the Raptors. Should the Cavs win and the Raptors lose tonight, the Raptors will only be 1.5 games ahead of the 4th seed. The Wizards have REALLY fallen off but the Bulls seem to be frustratingly keeping .5-1.0 games of separation between themselves and the Cavs...the next game between the two in April could be huge. It's one step forward, one step back with Chicago.

At this point I think Cleveland will do better than 18-7. Most games haven't even been funny after the 2nd quarter... They're playing really well. I'm really looking forward to see some teams that give them a better competition, because LeBron seems to go into chill mode at every 2nd half right now.

Regarding strength of schedule, those numbers are prone to wild swings given that everyones schedule in the same conference is fairly close in terms of opponents win %, and literally a couple games can wildly swing things. For example.... Miami entered the post all star break stretch with one of the easiest schedules in the east. But after getting through with the Knicks and 76ers these last few days, they suddenly have one of the toughest remaining schedules (4th hardest in the east, and within 1 percent of opponents win % of being 2nd behind cleveland

These next 10 or so are a pretty demanding stretch, but after that cleveland may have the easiest schedule in the league

Tonight with 5 assists he will pass Scottie Pippen for most assists in NBA history by a Forward. 27th all time overall.

He just loves getting those 2-3 turnovers out of his system early.

Stayed in late again. Sat at like 4:30 so he'll stay off the court for a bit longer to keep the first quarter at 8-9 minutes.

Well that turned quickly without Bron on the floor. Hopefully he can calm them down on both ends.

Making good defensive decisions off Tayshaun last 2-3 possessions. Bad foul call by the ref.

The Cavs are a minus 19 with Lebron off the floor in this first half.

The Pistons to me are easily the most dangerous team among the 7/8 seed candidates in the east.

Should we be concerned about the wrist at this point? We are nearly a month removed from the initial injury, and he still finds it necessary to wear that wrap. His perimeter shot has been off over this time... I hope there's not more going on there than we know. Right as I type this he took a shot from Drummond on a drive to the rack, looked like he got kicked right on the knee cap and came up holding his hip shortly after as well

Love still seems allergic to contesting shots at the rim.

Perkins in 1:30 minutes of action:

- Gets blown by completely in a pick'n'roll, tries to close out on the shooter but has a slow arse rotation and then completely absents himself from any rebounding position since he thought he was gonna somehow 'bother' the shooter.
- Next play, commits a stupid unnecessary foul because he's an incompetent defender, with the Cavs in the bonus too
- Final play, commits an illegal screen; offensive foul

Why did the Cavs sign this atrocious player again? If he's gonna function as some sort of proverbial motivator, tutor and shouting instruction at least glue him to the bench, because I've seen this guy suffering to be a serviceable basketball player for far too long on OKC, my eyes can't take it anymore...
