Re: Rubio vs Lin
i don't think he has paul/nash potential, not even close. however i think it's fair game to compare him to rubio and irving. plus, linsanity has 3 whole games of evidence to back it up. compare this 2 page thread to any number of 10+ page threads from 2 seasons ago reacting to brandon jennings dropping a double-nickel.

It this a joke. There is no thinking, Lin is flat out more athletic than Rubio in almost every aspect of measurable athleticism. Lin athleticism solely gets looked down upon because he is not that explosive as a leaper ( especially of two feet), but if you give him a running start he is poster alert, especially since he is a one footed leaper.
OJ Mayo , Michael Jordan , Allen Iverson.

He looks more athletic than OJ Mayo.

Re: Rubio vs Lin
i have no idea where Lin ranks. The sample size is too small. He could be a backup PG that just had a nice streak or he could be an elite guard.
Lin looks impressive though. He's got the athleticism/explosiveness combined with some very good playmaking skills.
No one in this thread really knows. It probably didn't help that he went to Harvard since there have hardly been any serious prospects coming out of there.
We'll just have to see how he does from game to game.

Re: Rubio vs Lin
I think from the 4 games I've roughly seen of Lin...
I already made the comment that he has Nash-like mannerism... he doesnt pick his dribble when defenders check him, which is good, he moves similar to Nash too, except less crafty but stronger to the basket.
What I like from Lin is his shot selection, he knows his limits... he picks them just right.
Rubio cannot shoot.... Jason Kidd all over again.... Thats his weakness...... he needs to watch more Nash.... even Curry or Lin.. lol.
But Rubio will improve.... and I think Lin will eventually come back to earth, because right now the dude is playing like a man possessed....
My predictions..
Lin as 17-18ppg 8-9apg 4rpg 1spg player for an uptempto system.... bigger and stronger slower Tony Parker with Nash like mannerism.
Rubio as a 13ppg 9-10apg 4rpg 2.5spg player for a similar system. A craftier Jason Kidd-lite

Re: Rubio vs Lin
Lin lucked into a good situation at the right time. He has proved he can play in the NBA obviously but there is no doubt he wouldn't be putting up these numbers if both Melo and Stat were playing during the same stretch in my opinion. I would be very surprised if Lin kept shooting 15+ times a game with them in the line up. Also Melo will really have to change his game up some if he wants it to work. I'm still a little skeptical of the kid because of those reasons and the small sample size so far but I will enjoy watching what unfolds. No matter what happens this week alone has been a blessing for him and he seemed to find his place in the NBA. All the hype and his fan base that has come with him recently can keep this guy in the NBA, this "Linsanity" thing has been pretty wild.

Holy crap, 38 points, 7 assists against Kobe and the Lakers tonight. I'm in awe...
I'm the biggest Nash fan, but this kid has something special.

Suns fan during the KJ era (Coliseum), through the Barkley era (Am West Arena), and now the Nash era (US Airways Arena)!

Re: Rubio vs Lin
It's hard not to sound like I'm getting caught up in all the Lin craze, but he's already proven he's more capable of taking over a game. It's only one game but Lin was dominating both as a scorer and playmaker against the Lakers. 7 assists and 6 turnovers hardly sounds like a great game for a playmaker, but he was doing a great job of finding guys close to the basket for lay ups who either missed the shot or gotten fouled. His numbers don't accurately reflect how much he took over that entire game by himself.

not to mention defense. he was playing tremendous help D on Kobe and Bynum sagging off Blake and Fisher. and he took that charge on Barnes at the end, after doubling Kobe near the sideline and rotating back to his man. that possession was vintage Scottie Pippen. you are 100% right about playmaking though, he WAS entire offense for the Knicks, he created majority of their pts. tons of hockey assists too.

O RLY? Rubio is more exciting than the Taiwanese 15th man who has utterly dominated the NBA news cycle for every game he's seen significant minutes? Lin has opposing fans chanting his name last night, and cheering his every move twice as loud as any home team player.
IF (and I acknowledge it's not that likely) Jin can maintain this level of production, he's not just better than Rubio, he's a rival for CP3 and Rose.
As for Rubio being better at everything minus finishing around the basket...
2pt FG%
RUBIO: 39%
LIN: 61%
TS%
RUBIO 49.6
LIN: 61.3
Lin is not just better around the basket, but far better anywhere inside the arc, and his efficiency simply dwarfs Rubio's.
Pts/36
Rubio 11.3
LIN: 22.7
Lin has shown the ability to score TWICE as many points, on staggeringly higher efficiency.
AST%
RUBIO: 40.9
LIN: 49.5
Thus far Lin has shown a higher assist rate while passing to scrubs like Novak and 10 ppg C Tyson Chandler. Rubio has been passing to Kevin Love.
TOV%
RUBIO: 22.6
LIN: 17.8
For a turnover machine with "no left hand" Lin also turns it over less.
TRB%
RUBIO 7.3
LIN 7.1
Virtually identical even though this is one of Rubio's biggest strengths
STL%
RUBIO 3.6
LIN 2.4
Advantage Rubio, though Lin is looking like a better man defender
Ortg
Rubio 103
Lin 117
Wolves have been a mediocre offense while Rubio's been on the court. While Lin's been on the court the Knicks have been one of the best in the league, even though they have literally no other 10 ppg player currently healthy.
PER
Rubio 16.7
Lin 26.8
Rubio above average, Lin MVP caliber
WS/48
Rubio .123
Lin .265
Rubio above average, Lin MVP caliber.
Now, Lin is 2 years older, but Rubio has more experience both as a pro and as an NBA player.
Yes, this is all a small sample size for Lin and he will probably stop being THIS insane at some point. But the numbers say that IF this is the real Jeremy Lin... he's a top 3 NBA PG right NOW.
I will waiting for and analysis like this 20 games later. Or made the same with the best 4 games of Rubio.

Ask and ye shall receive! Lin's last 4 games (and the only 4 of his career with real minutes) vs. Rubio's best 4 games out of 27 played this season, by basketballreference's gamescore.
RUBIO LIN
MPG 38.3 38.5
PPG 17.8 28.5
RPG 4.8 3.8
APG 11.0 8.0
SPG 2.5 1.8
TOV 2.8 4.3
TS% .633 .648
FTA/G 4.0 8.8
By gamescore, Lin has 3 games better than Rubio's career best since the begining of Linsanity. Season PER now up to 28.7, prime CP3 levels. And he's gotten a team with horrible offensive talent, the Melo/STAT-less Knicks, playing like one of the better offenses in the league.
Yes, I'm a Knick fan. I'm bewildered. I've been watching this league for most of my life. So rarely is there a situation of uncharted territory.
tsherkin, can you get in here and explain to me why this is all a mirage and bound to fall apart embarassingly pretty soon? I don't know how much longer I can take this.

Re: Rubio vs Lin
Jesus...let the dust settle a little bit. Yeah, Lin the last 4 games has absolutely produced better than any 4 best games from Rubio because if Lin kept up that production he would be the best point guard in the NBA. Based on the fact that he was waived by two teams last fall and he started the season as a third stringer forgive me if I believe that he is going to come back down to earth at some point. Maybe "coming back down to earth" means he averages 16 points and 7 assists, which is obviously very good. I don't know. But he's not going to go from third stringer to MVP overnight. I'm not saying that he's a flash in the pan who's secretly going to start sucking soon, he may be a legit starter maybe a future all-star, I don't know. I'm just saying let's let the dust settle.
Also, no matter how good or bad Lin ends up, it doesn't take away from the fact that Rubio has been one of the best rookies this season and is an incredibly bright spot for the Timberwolves.
