Re: #8 Best Defensive Point Guard of All Time - The ten best defenders in each position project
I have really limited time now and I suspect that I will not be able to add anything more before the deadline so I will be brief.
This spot and the next two will come down to 4 players: Van Lier, Blaylock, Buse and McMillan. I feel the other candidates listed lack either longevity or pure ability in their prime years, but I'm willing to be convinced otherwise.
For #8 I choose Blaylock because I feel he has the best mix between impact stats, counting stats, team results, prime level and longevity among those 4, with Buse as a close second (man, in 1976 he averaged jaw-dropping 4.1 steals per game, or 3.7 per 36 minutes, (which is less cool), but anyway from the limited information we have for him, he seems to have been pretty valuable to his teams).

I'll go Mookie Blaylock, seems like there's more statistical evidence supporting him than a candidate like Cheeks
It's going to be a glorious day... I feel my luck could change

Don't feel very good about any of the picks here above one another, but got to make a call, so I'm going to go with Mookie Blaylock. I've seen enough of them both and prefer him over Cheeks by a very slim margin. Buse/Van Lier intrigue me, but I haven't seen enough to vote for them here and they don't have the reps to get all the way on that alone.
I bought a boat.

Don't have a lot of time, but I don't want to miss the boat before the deadline, so I'll get my pick in.....
Close between Blaylock and Cheeks for me (with guys like Nate McMillan and Eric Snow having decent cases, too, imo).
Norm Van Lier just doesn't pop off the screen for me as much as I'd expect (based on reputation); when I watch some of those 70's Bulls games, I generally come away a little more impressed with Jerry Sloan defensively.
K.C. Jones and Ricky Rubio simply don't have enough seasons/minutes to be serious contenders for me (Rubio eventually will).
I'll tentatively go with Mo Cheeks for my pick. Love watching him pressure the ball handler; besides being one of the greatest thieves of all-time, he'd often set opponents out of synch and force them to get into their halfcourt offense with a few seconds less shotclock than they'd like. Small but slippery on screens and fantastic (underrated) athlete, and very good longevity to boot.
Quick little highlight reel....

I'll join the Mookie Blaylock party. Sure, I could get more steals with Mugsy Bogues or Michael Adams on Tecmo Basketball, but Mookie was a great defender - passes the eye test and the stats test. I don't like Pearl Jam, though.
Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.
