Right now Sloan is claiming this spot fairly easily as he leads 7-2 to Dumars. I feel this is a right placement for him, though I suspect he could have gone even higher if we had some more stats for him. Unfortunately, I don't have the eye-test for him but from what I've read on the net, he was thought to be the most tenacious defender of his generation and this is somewhat backed up by All-D selections.
I've also liked a lot the trex's post particularly the part in which he mentions WOWYR because I think that if we don't have advanced metrics, infering defensive impact from the overall is one of the best things we can do. Basketball, in the end, is composed by two halves, offense and defense (one may add rebounding, but I think it's included in them) so if someone has good overall impact and is bad on O, he must be good on D.
This is a really simple line of thinking but allows us to have a broad idea on pre-1970s players.
In addition, he also seems to be a positive defender in DBPM, EI (though not as much as in the other sources) and in team ratings so I think that Sloan is probably the best candidate right now. My vote consequently goes to Jerry Sloan.

For the next spot, I'm particularly interested in Wade (and to a lesser extent Kobe) because he hasn't gotten traction yet, but he rates fairly well in impact metrics and has decent/good longevity too, so I feel he'll be my next choice.
